Topic: Quantification and Classification of Marine Litters On Beaches along the West Coast of Cameroon

Beaches are important tourist attractions and contribute to improving the quality of life. A clean beach is the main indicator of coastal environmental quality. Marine debris is a ubiquitous problem that poses a serious threat to the global oceans; it has motivated public participation in clean-up campaigns, as well as governmental involvement in developing mitigation strategies. While it is known that the problem of marine litter may be affected by waste management practices on land, beach survey results have seldom been compared with them.

The presence of marine debris along the West Coast of Cameroon has negatively affected the aesthetic appeal of beaches and reduce their recreational value and tourism quality in these regions. The anthropogenic marine litter is associated with diverse human activities and comes from a wide variety of sources both onshore and offshore.

The main objectives of this research would be to quantified and characterized marine litter along the West coast of Cameroon. The specific objective of the study would be to evaluate the sources of marine litters generated along the Coast of Cameroon, quantify and Characteristic the marine litters generated, determine public perception and attitudes on beach quality, and identify measures that could be put in place to improve the quality of beaches along the coast of Cameroon.

The study would be carried out along the West Coast of Cameroon. Four beaches would be surveyed every after 2 months from August 2021–June 2022, and December 2021–October 2022. Transect sites of 100 m x 50 m above the high tide mark parallel to the coastline would be selected at random on each site. Pilot studies would be carried out during the first year of enrolment of the Ph.D. (2020/2021).

GPS coordinates of each site would be recorded to enable subsequent survey in the same stretch of beach, and for use in possible GIS mapping. Identify marine litters within each transect line would be categorized by its type of material and source for litter generation activities. Questionnaire items would be designed and administer to visitors to identify each selected beach. Observation would also be employed to determine the density of visitors to the various beaches on the daily basis.

All statistical analysis would be performed using Excel sheet, SPSS (25.0) where descriptive statistics, ANOVA, multivariate analysis, Chart of Contingency, Graphs such as bar, pie, histogram, box plot, time series would be used to present analyze data. Results of the litter would be compared with those found at the National Marine Debris Monitoring Program (NMDMP) of the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) as well as the literature from other countries for detailed comparison.

Document analysis of waste management in Cameroon, Limbe, and along the West Coast of Cameroon would be review for waste management practices on the land, sea, and its influence on the marine environment.

The estimated budget for this research stands at 950,000 to 1, 200, 000FRS. Data collection would all embark during the second year of the Ph.D. study.

Sample Motivational Letter for a Ph.D. Student in Cameroon

I am writing to express my interest in pursuing a Ph.D. in Geography. I am particularly keen to apply for the doctoral program in the Geography department as its research interests are an excellent match for my academic background. I studied Biochemistry for my bachelor’s at the University of XXXX during this time I developed a particular interest in understanding the bacteria composition of municipal solid waste. Furthering this interest, I enrolled in Human Resource and Environmental Management for my master’s studies.

My MSc thesis which was supervised by Dr. Mbu Lawrance used statistical techniques to analyze  The Economics of Solid Waste Management Cameroon. My aim was not only to consider the ethical arguments that residents would be willing to pay to enjoy a better waste management service but also to show that residents in areas with poor waste management services would be willing to pay a certain market value to enjoy better waste management services.

I now wish to continue my academic career with a Ph.D. in Geography, and I cannot imagine a better place to study this than the Department of the Geography University of XXXX. I admire the geography department’s commitment to both fairness and accuracy, and I wish to further my work on Quantification and Classification of Marine Litters On Beaches along the West Coast of Cameroon. This research has the potential to contribute to environmental policies on debris management along the maritime coast of Cameroon. Monitoring helps policy-makers to design management measures that address the most prevalent forms of debris, as well as those that cause the most harmful effects in the marine environment.

With my knowledge of Municipal solid waste management and my experience with statistical analyses and modeling, I am confident that I can complete the research project which I have proposed to a high standard.
