Traditional Governance Structure in Bakossi Land: Persistence and Adaptation
Abstract
This research investigates the shifts that have occurred in the traditional governance framework of the Bakossi from the pre-colonial period to the post-independence age. The advent of colonialism in this region of Cameroon significantly influenced the evolving structures of traditional governance among the Bakossi community.
Their customs and traditions were reflected in regulatory groups such as the Muankum, Ahon, Ngwe, and Mal, but colonialism contributed to the erosion of the people’s traditional values in certain areas, particularly the Nyasoso region, which was the first to embrace Europeans.
Utilizing qualitative research design and historical research methodology to analyze the data, while integrating archival materials with interviews and some secondary sources, the study offers perspectives on the changes faced by the traditional governance systems of the Bakossi. The results indicate that the traditional governance practices currently observed in Bakossi land differ from those present during the pre-colonial era.
Additionally, it demonstrates that while there have been numerous alterations in the traditional governance framework of the Bakossi, some elements of conventional governance have endured into the 21st Century.
