THE US FOREIGN POLICY TOWARD AFRICA
Abstract
The United States of America (USA) foreign policy towards Africa, specifically Cameroon, has undergone several changes over the years. Cameroon, located in Central Africa, has been a strategic partner for the USA, particularly in the fight against terrorism, regional stability, and economic development. The USA has always emphasized the importance of peace and stability in Cameroon.
The country has been a major recipient of bilateral aid from the USA, which has been used to support development programs such as education, healthcare, and economic growth. Cameroon has also benefited from USA-led multilateral initiatives such as the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC). However, the USA’s relationship with Cameroon has been strained in recent years due to the country’s human rights violations, particularly in the Anglophone crisis.
The USA has been critical of Cameroon’s government for its suppression of freedom of speech, peaceful assembly, and association. The USA has responded by reducing its military aid to Cameroon, suspending some economic assistance and imposing visa bans on some Cameroonian officials.
The USA has also engaged with other international players such as the African Union and the United Nations in pressing Cameroon for a peaceful solution to the Anglophone crisis. In conclusion, the USA foreign policy towards Cameroon has evolved over the years, emphasizing the importance of peace, stability, and economic development.
However, with recent human rights violations, the USA has taken a tougher stance in pressing Cameroon for a peaceful solution to the crisis while still maintaining key partnerships.
