THE SETTLEMENT OF THE BAKASSI PENINSULA CONFLICT AS A BLUEPRINT FOR PEACEFUL CONFLICT RESOLUTION IN AFRICA
Abstract
This study explores the settlement of the Bakassi Peninsula conflict as a model for peaceful conflict resolution in Africa, particularly in the context of the border dispute between Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
The research highlights the historical backdrop of colonialism, which has significantly contributed to ongoing border conflicts across the continent. It examines the resource curse phenomenon, where nations rich in natural resources often face economic and political challenges.
The Bakassi conflict, resolved through diplomatic and legal means rather than armed conflict, serves as a successful case study. The study outlines the similarities between the Bakassi Peninsula and the Equatorial Guinea/Gabon disputes over oil-rich islands, emphasizing the potential for peaceful negotiations. Through qualitative research, key conflict resolution mechanisms are identified, alongside the root causes of the ongoing tensions.
The research questions focus on effective strategies for applying the lessons learned from the Bakassi resolution to similar conflicts in Africa. Ultimately, the study aims to provide policy recommendations that can enhance conflict resolution efforts, foster cooperation, and promote sustainable peace in the region.
The findings suggest that successful conflict management in Africa requires a nuanced understanding of historical grievances, resource management, and the role of international law in facilitating dialogue.
