THE ROLE OF NON- GOVERNMENTAL ORGANISATIONS IN THE PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN BUEA
Abstract
This study investigates the pivotal role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the protection and advocacy of human rights within Fako Division, Cameroon. It addresses the persistent gap between established human rights norms and their practical enforcement, particularly in the context of increasing NGO influence due to globalization.
The research identifies the dual functions of NGOs: promoting human rights awareness and providing protection against abuses, often in opposition to state actions that limit their effectiveness. Key objectives include examining the nature and scope of NGO activities, the existing regulatory and policy frameworks, and evaluating the effectiveness of measures aimed at overcoming challenges faced by these organizations.
Utilizing qualitative research methodologies such as content analysis and in-depth interviews with key figures in the human rights sector, the study reveals critical insights into the operational landscape of NGOs. Findings indicate that while NGOs significantly contribute to human rights advocacy, they encounter substantial obstacles, including governmental restrictions and security threats that hinder their capacities.
The research underscores the importance of public support and collaboration between NGOs and state authorities to enhance human rights protections. Ultimately, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the interplay between state sovereignty and NGO activities in human rights advocacy, emphasizing the need for comprehensive strategies to empower NGOs and ensure the realization of human rights for all in Fako Division.
