THE ROLE OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY IN WATER LEAK DETECTION IN DOUALA
Abstract
A significant amount of water is lost in the water supply system. Water leakages have been a major problem for many regions around the world. In some countries water loss due to water leakages in the supply network exceeds 40% of the water in the supply system.
This study ,“The Role of Digital Technology In Water Leak Detection In The Water Distribution Sector Of Cameroon” aims to find out the causes of water leaks in Bonaberi, the resulting effects caused by these leaks and to propose the different digital technology applications that can be applied to detect water leaks from pipes.
The study had a sample size of 100 respondents and the data was collected via questionnaires which had both open ended and closed ended questions, interviews and the study also made use of secondary data. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 26.0. it was found out that the main causes of water leaks were the location of pipes, the material of the pipes, the age of the pipes, the pressure of water flowing through the pipes, theft, transportation vehicles and population growth.
The study revealed that the effects of the water leaks were water loss which led to water scarcity, water pollution which led poor health conditions and poor standards of living, destruction of materials and increase spending and monetary cost with floodings and bad roads. This study proposed digital technologies such as smart water meters, Supervisory, control and date acquisition ( SCADA), sensors and GIS.
It was recommended that the water distribution sector should put up adoption plans for digital technology to solve the problem water leaks detection.
