THE HUMANITARIAN ROLE PLAYED BY CHURCHES IN THE ANGLOPHONE CRISIS IN CAMEROON
Abstract
This research looks at the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon’s (PCC) participation in the Anglophone dispute. This time period was chosen since it is when the crisis reached its apex in Cameroon’s English-speaking areas.
As a result, it aimed to determine what contributions the PCC provided in this context. The survey research method was used. The interview guide and questionnaire (Likert scale) were used to examine primary information from the field.
35 important respondents were selected using the purposive sampling approach. These individuals were chosen from among the Administrators, clergy, and church employees who had direct responsibilities to play in executing the PCC’s contributions to crisis resolution.
Descriptive analyses was used to present quantitative descriptions in a manageable form using pie charts, histogram, and graphs.
The data analyses tool used for this work was Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. For the qualitative data, the narrative analysis method was used. From findings obtained from the field, results proved that; the PCC in its drive towards mitigating the effects of the crisis played a great role especially by providing assistance to those affected by the crisis. This support how ever did not target only its Christians but everyone within the society that was hit/affected by the crisis.
This mitigation technique was implemented through the church’s social services as well as ecclesiastical organizations. The findings also revealed that the PCC has actively collaborated with the state to alleviate the Anglophone situation. Despite the fact that dispensing with this humanitarian position has not been easy, she has surrendered in her attempts to carry out her objective.
According to the findings of this study, the PCC has played a critical role in the crises afflicting Cameroon’s Anglophone regions. Following the study’s results and conclusion, it is recommended that the PCC should not desist in her efforts to carry out her duty, despite the problems that may arise.
