THE EFFICIENCY OF PEACE PROMOTION EFFORTS IN RELATION TO THE ANGLOPHONE ISSUE
Abstract
This research aimed to investigate how effective the peace-building efforts implemented by the Cameroonian government have been in addressing the security issues in Anglophone Cameroon. A lack of unity, particularly in the face of insurgency and insecurity, predicts dire consequences.
Amid the ongoing conflicts in Cameroon, the nation experiences considerable instability. While the government has instituted certain measures, many of them, such as the Grand National Dialogue held from September 30 to October 4, 2019, and the recruitment of one thousand bilingual teachers, have yet to be effectively realized. Despite these initiatives, the turmoil persists, as many of these actions appear to be mere facades.
The specific goals were to: assess the peace-building strategies employed by the government in Anglophone Cameroon, evaluate the efficacy of these initiatives, explore various challenges encountered in implementing these peace-building efforts, and examine the prospects for overcoming such obstacles.
To fulfill this aim, a mixed-method research design was utilized in this study, facilitating the collection of data from a substantial population. This design was deemed suitable as the investigation employed both quantitative instruments (surveys) and qualitative instruments (interviews). The research was conducted in Kumba, located in the Meme Division of the South West Region of Cameroon. The strategic positioning of Kumba at the heart of the South West Region is crucial for this study. The Kumba I municipality encompasses many villages and neighborhoods, including Njuki, Njembeng, Ekemba, Diffa, Barombi Mbo, Kake Bokoko, and Kake Bongwana. Kumba is also the administrative center for the Meme Division, hosting the Office of the Senior Divisional Officer for Meme, alongside most government services located within Kumba I. Additionally, it serves as the location of the Kumba city council and the renowned Kumba market.
The researcher made use of both primary and secondary sources of literature. Primary source were obtained through interview from resource persons and secondary sources were obtained from articles, textbooks, journals internet and past projects. The target population was made up of the population of Kumba. The Sampling Technique the simple random and the purposive sampling technique were used to select participants of the study.
The selections of respondents were carried out through random ballot. Findings indicate that some of the challenges faced in Peace Building Initiatives are Institutional Challenges and Gaps, Power and Political Challenges, Institutional/Bureaucratic Challenges, the Challenge of Vision and Ideas, and Aligning Priorities and Resources, so therefore, the researcher was able to propose some recommendations.
