IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background Of The Study
Social media has become an increasingly popular means of communication and information sharing across the world, with billions of people using social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Social media has also become an integral part of the lives of young people, including students, who use these platforms to connect with friends, share experiences, and engage in various forms of social interaction.
While social media has many positive benefits, there are also concerns about its potential negative effects, particularly on students’ academic performance. Studies have shown that social media use can lead to distractions, reduced study time, and poor academic performance. Social media can also contribute to sleep deprivation, which can lead to fatigue and impaired cognitive function, affecting students’ ability to concentrate and learn.
In addition to academic concerns, social media use can also have negative effects on students’ mental health and well-being. Cyberbullying, social comparison, and fear of missing out (FOMO) are some of the negative effects associated with social media use, which can lead to anxiety, stress, and depression.

However, the impact of social media on students’ academic performance is a concern for school administrators, teachers, and parents.
