CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The Menchum Cultural Association is an international organization Established in 1995 by a dedicated group of Menchum individuals, the MCA functions as an international cultural organization. Unlike organizations solely operating within national borders, the MCA transcends geographical limitations. Its primary mission is to cultivate understanding and appreciation for Menchum, culture, not just within the Menchum community but also among the broader American public. This outward focus aligns perfectly with the core function of international cultural organizations fostering cultural exchange and collaboration (Smith,2012).
The MCA’s success in promoting Menchum culture hinges on a multifaceted approach. Cultural festivals serve as vibrant celebrations, re-enacting traditional ceremonies like Rabin Ajau (planting time) and ancestral rituals (Anderson,2015). These events not only connect Menchum individuals to their roots but also offer a platform for transmitting cultural knowledge across generations. The sights, sounds, and stories shared during these festivals become bridges between past and present, ensuring the continuation of cherished traditions.
Beyond celebratory events, the MCA takes on the role of a cultural custodian. Language classes ensure the Menchum language, a vital marker of identity, thrives in the American context. Workshops on traditional crafts, like weaving documented by Güitz (1998), further enrich this preservation effort. Educational programs delve into Menchum history, art forms, and narratives, empowering Menchum youth to connect with their heritage and foster pride in their background (Ngum 2021). These initiatives ensure that the essence of Menchum culture is not lost in the currents of time and adaptation.
The Menchum cultural association role extends beyond mere preservation. It actively fosters cultural exchange, a key objective of international cultural organizations. By organizing events open to the broader American public, the MCA dismantles stereotypes and builds bridges of understanding. This outward engagement allows the Menchum community to share their unique cultural tapestry with others, fostering a more inclusive and enriched American society. Additionally, collaborations with organizations like UNESCO, as seen in the 2019 cultural festival, elevate the Menchum culture to a global stage, garnering international recognition and appreciation.
The Menchum cultural association impact extends inwards as well, nurturing a strong support system for the Menchum community in the USA. As documented by fabe et al. (2022), the organization provides a space for Menchum immigrants to connect, share experiences, and access resources that ease integration into American life. This social support network combats feelings of isolation, particularly for recent arrivals, fostering a sense of belonging and easing the challenges of navigating a new cultural landscape.
In conclusion, the Menchum Cultural Association serves as a powerful example of an international cultural organization effectively promoting an indigenous culture within the United States.
Through a combination of cultural preservation efforts, educational programs, and community outreach initiatives, the MCA ensures the Menchum heritage not only survives but thrives in its new home. By fostering cultural exchange and collaboration, the MCA strengthens the vibrant tapestry of American society while ensuring the Menchum identity continues to flourish for generations to come.
1.2 Problem Statement
The main problem this research identifies is a decline in Menchum cultural values among young people in the USA, seen in waning language fluency, reduced participation in traditional ceremonies like Rabin Ajau, and fading historical knowledge and appreciation for Menchum art forms. This erosion can lead to weakened cultural identity and difficulties navigating dual Guatemalan-American heritage, fostering alienation.
Additionally, the loss of traditional practices threatens the long-term preservation of Menchum culture. Addressing this decline is crucial through understanding contributing factors and implementing effective preservation strategies to ensure the enduring richness of Menchum heritage in the United States..
1.3 Research Questions:
1.3.1 Main Research Question
