THE ROLE OF GOOD OFFICES IN MITIGATING INTRA-STATE CONFLICT. THE CASE OF THE ANGLOPHONE CONFLICT IN CAMEROON
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to find out the role of good offices in mitigating intra-state conflicts: the case of the Anglophone conflict. Conflicts are inevitable in human relations; they have been considered a regular part of human existence.
The African continent is plagued with a plethora of conflicts, reasons why most scholars have referred to it as the home of conflict. The gruesome and perpetual violation of human rights in Cameroon is alarming and a call for concern especially from 2016 to present as a result of ongoing Anglophone conflict.
The government has tried to curb human rights violation in the country but its measures seem ineffective. This has caused the researcher to investigate the role played by the government and other international actors in the protection and promotion of education during situations. This is because, it has been observed that education is mostly violated during conflicts.
A detailed study and questionnaires done on the activities of some selected respondents and who have been very active in monitoring, documenting and reporting issues of the conflict and education carried out.
Findings have revealed that these intra-state conflicts have a direct influence on education. Their efforts to bring to the lamplight the true meaning of education in Cameroon especially during the Anglophone conflict despite the numerous challenges that they are facing.
Based on the findings, the paper highlights some positive policy recommendations that may help improve their role of promoting and protecting the educational system in the country most especially Buea.
