THE PREVALENCE AND DETERMINANTS OF DEPRESSION AMONG PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS IN THE BUEA HEALTH DISTRICT
Abstract
Although anyone can suffer from depression, it’s twice as common among people who are living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Around one in three people living with HIV have some symptoms of depression at some point in their lives. Depression is a significant mental health issue affecting individuals worldwide, including those living with HIV. This study aims to assess the prevalence and identify determinants of depression among people living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome aged 21 years and above in the Buea Health District of Cameroon.
The research utilizes a cross-sectional study design, involving 355 individuals from 21years and above living with HIV in the Buea Health District. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data; on the knowledge of depression, a standard Patient Health questionnaire- 9 (PHQ-9) tool.
Among PLWHA in the Buea Health District 65.1% were females and 51.3% of them had attended tertiary education and their mean age was 40.3±11.9 years. One hundred and seventy-six, 49.6% were self-employed and 46.2% were married. A total of 34.9% of the participants’ average monthly income was above one hundred thousand and the prevalence of depression was 15.5%. Furthermore 93.0% of the participants reported poor knowledge on depression. People who were previously diagnosed of depression or other mental health disorders were more likely to be severely depressed.
The proportion of PLWHA reported with depression was high; about 3 in 20 persons living with HIV were reported with depression. The knowledge of depression among individuals living with HIV was extremely low and only previous diagnosis of depression was found associated with depression in this study. Furthermore, depression screening should be included as part of routine consultation of HIV/AIDS patients to ensure early detection. Finally relevant health care stakeholders should integrate mental health into HIV/AIDS programs.
