SEARCH FOR PATHOGENIC MICROORGANISMS IN WATER COLLECTED FROM FISH PONDS AT ATTO – MUNGO
Abstract
Globally, a considerable amount of information has been made available with respect to pathogenic microorganisms in fish ponds.
This study was aimed at bringing out the bacteriological quality of water in fish ponds in an attempt to search for and identify pathogenic microorganisms.
Samples (water) were aseptically collected from fish ponds at Atto Mungo and transported to the Research Foundation in Tropical Diseases and the Environment (REFOTDE) laboratory in Molyko Buea.
Samples were cultured on nutrient Agar, Salmonella shigella agar and Mac Conkey agar and isolated colonies were characterized using gram stain and biochemical test. This result showed that there was minimum contamination of water collected from the fish ponds.
This study will help enhance the idea of proper fish pond control and sanitation management in an attempt to reduce the prevalence of water and food borne infections in our society.
1.3 Rationale
It is evident that water remains one of most important necessities for life. This is particular with fish whose survival solely depends on water.
The choice of assessing the microbial quality of fish pond water is important because fish found in these ponds are consumed by humans, hence studying the microbial quality of the water is important because it provides information on the contamination of fish pond water by microbial agents and enables the implementation of public health policies on Pisces culture.
This research shall bring to focus the need for proper fish culture and sanitation which shall help reduce the prevalence and incidence of food and water-borne infections in our society and community at large.
1.4 Hypothesis
Water samples collected from fish ponds at Atto Mungo are contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms
1.5 Objectives
1.5.1 Overall objective:
The overall objective will be to search for pathogenic microorganisms in water collected from fish ponds at Atto Mungo.
1.5.2 Specific objectives:
- To determine the bacteria load of water collected from fish ponds at Atto Mungo
- To isolate and identify pathogenic microorganisms in water from these fish ponds
