LANGUAGE ATTRITION AMONG ENGLISH LANGUAGE SPEAKERS IN THE BUEA MUNICIPALITY
Abstract
Language attrition is the process of losing a native or first language, this process is generally used by both isolation from speakers of the first language and the acquisition and use of a second language.
The purpose of this study was to investigate what causes the loose of someone’s native or first language in Buea Municipality. Specifically, the research sought out to examine the causes of language attrition among English language speakers or the dropdown of some English language speakers.
Data was collected with the use of questionnaires from a sample population of 22 people, the simple random sampling design was used. Findings revealed that the attitudes and values of the English speakers towards the first language was a surprising one.
It is recommended that future studies should consider expanding the sample size to include a more diverse group of participants, this will enable the researchers to make more generalizable conclusions about the phenomenon of language attrition.
