ISOLATION OF ACINETOBACTER BAUMANNII FROM STREAM WATER, HOSPITAL SURFACES, AND POULTRY FEEDERS/DRINKERS IN TIKO ENVIRONMENT
Abstract
Acinetobacter baumannii is a Gram-negative, opportunistic pathogen, causing severe infections difficult to treat. The A. baumannii infection rate has increased year by year in human medicine and it is also considered as a major cause of nosocomial infections worldwide. This bacterium is well known for its ability to form biofilms, has a strong environmental adaptability and the characteristics of multi-drug resistance.
Indeed, strains showing fully resistant profiles represent a worrisome problem in clinical therapeutic treatment. Furthermore, A. baumannii associated veterinary nosocomial infections has been reported in recent literature. Particularly, carbapenem-resistant A.baumannii can be considered an emerging opportunistic pathogen in human medicine as well as in veterinary medicine.
- baumannii has become a major cause for concern in conflict zones, and has gained particular notoriety in the resent desert conflicts in Iraq, earning it the moniker “Iraqibacter This study was aimed at confirming the presence of Acinetobacter baumannii in both community and hospital isolates.
This was done by culturing 8 isolates on blood agar followed by subculturing on MacConkey agar by quadrant streaking inorder to obtain pure isolates. The culture was observed macroscopically after 24 hours. Pure colonies were gram stained and viewed under the microscope at 100X objective.
Biochemical test were done inorder to confirm the presence of _Acinetobacter baumannii Of the 8 samples cultured, 2 were lactose fermenting while 6 were not. Further test were done in the remaining 6 isolates. After the API20NE test, Acinetobacter species was successfully identified in 3 isolates with 2 of them being Acinetobacter baumannii.
