GENERAL INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

Transportation accessibility is a cornerstone of urban development, influencing the socio-economic well-being of communities. According to Rodrigue (2020), efficient transportation systems are vital for connecting people to essential services, employment opportunities, and social amenities. In Cameroon, the lack of adequate transportation infrastructure has become a significant barrier to economic growth and social inclusion. Poor road conditions, limited public transit options, and high transportation costs have exacerbated mobility challenges for residents. These issues highlight the urgent need for research to understand the specific impacts of transportation accessibility in this context.

The socio-economic implications of transportation accessibility have been widely documented in urban studies. As noted by Litman (2021), accessible transportation systems reduce poverty by improving access to jobs, education, and healthcare. The absence of reliable transportation has disproportionately affected low-income residents, limiting their ability to participate in economic activities. This has led to increased socio-economic disparities, as those without access to transportation are often excluded from opportunities that could improve their quality of life. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive understanding of the local transportation landscape.

Urbanization has intensified the demand for efficient transportation systems in cities worldwide. This study seeks to address this gap by evaluating the impact of transportation accessibility on the socio-economic outcomes and quality of life for residents in Bamenda Town. By examining the current state of transportation infrastructure, identifying the socio-economic impacts, and exploring the challenges faced by residents, this research aims to provide actionable insights that can inform policy decisions and improve transportation systems in the area.
