IMPACT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BUEA ON FAKO DIVISION
Abstract
This study to examine the Origin and evolution of the University of Buea since its creation in 1993. It seeks to bring out the impacts of the University of Buea on Fako division and the challenges of the University and suggest the way forward. In applying this method, the quantitative approach was consulted.
Primary sources included an inventory of informants while secondary sources included published and unpublished documents .The study has clearly traced out the evolution of the University of Buea, brought out the impact of the universe of Buea and also the challenges face by the University of Buea and the way forward.
GENERAL INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
In 1992/93 a series of presidential decrees transferred the higher education landscape profounded by dissolving the University of Yaoundé and creating six new universities. Decree no 92/074 of 13 April 1992 transformed the university centers of Buea and Ngaoundere into fully- fled defined command condition for the operation of the universities of Cameroon, decree no 93/034, also of 19 January 1993, Organized the university of were aimed at improving the performance of the higher education despite 90s, the university of Buea started off boldly in May 1993 with 768 students enrolled in the advanced school of translators and interpreters (ASTI) and the following three faculties that is the faculty of Arts, the faculty of Science and the faculty of Social and Management Science .
Funds to run the university came, for the most part from the state. State subvention has recurrent and investment components. The university generates revenue principally from registration fees. Also, academic staff of the university also obtain research grants from foreign partners for the 2006/2007 year such grants which were worth 200000000 France represent a mere 4% of the universities budget of 5,151,188,000 France for 2007.
The university currently has five faculties and are school. Each of them has a one or programs that are more academic are in change of one of programed 32. The problem face by most department is that of large improment in relations to the small number of lecturer.
The University of Buea is located historically on the Eastern part of mount Cameroon. It the only English speaking institution of its kind in predominantly French speaking central Africa. An all Limbe, and some 30km to the west, or from the Douala can easily reach it. It is just a toxic dropped off at list 100 France from Mile 17 Buea. It is located exactly at the town of Molyko Buea.
The mission of the University of Buea is to provide opportunities for quality education through teaching and research in an environment that is contusive to such pursuits and in ways that respond to market force concise led in the English speaking tradition, the university of Buea seeks to foster the essence of that system while situating itself within the larger bilingual and multicultural context of Cameroon. The University of Buea welcomes all freshmen to its campus for every academic year
Fako is located in the southwest region of Cameroon. The division is further divided into 5 sub- division is further which includes Buea, Muyuka, Tiko, Limbe and Idenau. Agriculture is the mayor economic activity of the people ,employing a large proportion of the population with tomatoes, plantations, Maize, cassava and Cocoyam as the main or most common food crops poultry pigs, goat and to a lesser extent cattle as domesticated livestock. Below show the map of Fako mayor cities surrounding this. The local population is estimated at about 400,000 inhabitants, with 63% living in semi- Urban and 37% in rural areas respectively
Statement of the problem.
Since the creation of the University of Buea in 1992 which began operational in 1993,Fako as a whole has witnessed drastic changes. The essence of this work is to point out the impact of the University of Buea in Fako Division that is how the University of Buea has impacted Fako Division positively and negatively.
Objective of the Study
In order to realize this study or this work the objectives are divided into 2 that is the major objectives and the specific objectives.
The major objectives of this study is to demonstrate the impact of the University of Buea in Fako division
The specific objectives of this study are divided into four;
- The study aims at pointing out the motives for the creation of University of Buea
- The work seeks to bring out the evolution of the University of Buea in terms of infrastructure and student enrolment
- This study aims to demonstrate how the University of Buea has impacted Fako in the social cultural domain, economic, and political domains.
- Lastly, this work seeks to point out the challenge and the way forward to the maintenance of the University of Buea.
