GENDER, POWER AND DE-CENTERING A READING OF CARROL ANN DUFFY’S “THE WORLD’S WIFE”
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.0 Background Of Study
Carrol Ann Duffy’s “The World’s Wife” is a collection of poems that retell the stories of famous men from the perspective of their wives. This collection of poems offers a unique perspective on gender and power, challenging traditional narratives and providing a voice for the often overlooked and marginalized female characters in literature.
1.1 Research Problem
The traditional literary canon has been dominated by male authors, whose works often perpetuate patriarchal ideologies. This study seeks to de-center the male narrative and explore how Duffy’s “The World’s Wife” challenges traditional gender roles and power dynamics in literature.
1.2 Purpose Of Study
The purpose of this study is to provide a critical analysis of “The World’s Wife” by examining the themes of gender, power, and de-centering. This study aims to contribute to the ongoing conversation on gender and power in literature, as well as highlight the importance of diverse perspectives in the literary canon.
1.3 Research Questions
- How does Duffy’s “The World’s Wife” challenge traditional gender roles and power dynamics in literature?
- In what ways does “The World’s Wife” provide a voice for marginalized female characters in literature?
- How does de-centering the male narrative in “The World’s Wife” contribute to a broader understanding of gender and power in literature?
1.4 Research Hypothesis
It is hypothesized that “The World’s Wife” challenges traditional gender roles and power dynamics in literature by providing a unique perspective on famous men from the perspective of their wives.
This de-centering of the male narrative allows for a more nuanced understanding of gender and power in literature, as well as providing a voice for marginalized female characters.
