THE EFFECT OF EMPLOYEE EMPOWERMENT ON ORGANISATIONAL CITIZENSHIP BEHAVIOUR IN MICROFINANCE INSTITUTIONS IN BUEA
Abstract
This study assessed the effect of employee empowerment on organisational citizenship behaviour in microfinance institutions in Buea. The three dimensions of employees’ empowerment according to Meyer and Allen (1996) which are employee training, employee autonomy and information sharing were taken as the independent variables while the dependent variable is organisational citizenship behaviour in microfinance institutes.
A descriptive research design was used in this study a five-point Likert scale questionnaire administered to 80 employees in these Microfinance institutions. Based on the findings, employees training has a negative effect on organisational citizenship behaviour, employee autonomy has a positive but insignificant effect on organisational citizenship behaviour. and information sharing has a positive but insignificant effect on organisational citizenship behaviour in microfinance institution in Buea. Also, educational qualification and longevity of service have a significant effect on organisational citizenship behaviour.
Finally, the study recommended that the management of these microfinances and others in Buea should developed retention strategies to make sure that they keep their employees, this is because the longer their service in these microfinance, the more appealing their organisational citizenship behaviour, Also, managers should understand and implement the various three (3) employee empowerment practices in their various institutions, like autonomy and information share to enable their employees portray extra behaviour (organisational citizenship behaviour)
