THE DETERMINANTS OF THE PURCHASE DECISION OF COOKING GAS BY STUDENTS OF HIGHER INSTITUTIONS OF LEARNING IN BUEA
Abstract
The main objective of this study was to assess the factors that determine students purchasing behaviours (decisions) of cooking gas in Buea. A descriptive survey design was adopted and a convenience sampling technique was employed to select some 390 students in Buea using questionnaires. SPSS version 21.0 was used for the analysis and Pearson correlation for testing of hypotheses.
The study noted that the marketing mix factors shared the highest relationship with students buying behaviours of cooking gas in Buea. Similarly, the socio-economic factors studied were found to have a positive and strong relationship with students purchasing decisions of cooking gas brands in Buea. Lastly, this study found that psychological factors has a positive and strong relationship with students purchasing decisions of cooking gas brands in Buea.
Conclusively, all the three categories of factors (predictor variables) studied (psychological, socio-economic and the marketing mix factors) have a positive and statistically significant association with the outcome variable.
In this case students buying behaviours and decisions of cooking gas brands in Buea measured at 95.5% confidence level. It is recommended that the government of Cameroon who is the single controller of liquefied petroleum bottled cooking gas should through its relevant bodies take responsibility to control marketing factors like price of gas, availability of gas, quantity and quality of gas because they have a strong influence on the purchasing behaviour of students in Buea. The government through its price control should as a matter of necessity be sincere to do concrete follow-up and control to ensure gas is distributed evenly throughout the country and that it is made available at all times.
