CUSTOMERS’ PERCEPTION OF MOBILE MONEY IN CAMEROON
Abstract
Since MTN introduced theirs in 2011, the MoMo services have gained about 8 million subscribers till date.
The objective of the research is to examine the perception of consumers of the MTN Mobile service and the challenges that people face using the services. Four theories were used by the researcher which involved the Uses and Gratification Theory, Diffusion of Innovation Theory, Technology Acceptance Model by Davis (1989) and the Unified theory of Acceptance and use of technology by Venkatesh et al. (2013).
Quantitative research design was used for the study employing the survey method. The Data was collected with the use of questionnaires with 300 questionnaires administered in neighbourhoods such as Muea, Buea Town, Molyko (UB Junction), OIC, Bongo Square. The data were collected with the use of questionnaires. Findings reveal that customers’ perceptions include: it is very necessary today (85, 28.3%), very convenient in sending and saving money (83, 27.7%), facilitates monetary transaction and it is secure (69, 23%).
Challenges involved in using MTN Mobile Money services include poor network (110, 36.7%), hacking, scamming and theft (83, 27.7%), high charges (51, 17%), inadequate cash (50, 16.7%) and dishonesty of some MTN mobile money operators (3, 1%).
It is thus recommended that Mobile Money providers should provide a reliable mobile network which is a critical component of a mobile payment service, as customers have less patience for transmission problems.
