CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.0 General Introduction

The researcher looks at the general introduction of Cross cultural influence of English language and its influence on other languages. She also examines how this has changed over time, particularly during the Industrial Revolution when English became more widely used as a lingua franca.

The researcher looks at how English has contributed to the development of other languages in different ways. For example, she examines how it has influenced some languages by acquiring vocabulary from them (e.g., through contact with another language), and how it has influenced others by introducing new words or syntactic patterns (e.g., through contact with another language).

The researcher also looks at how English has influenced other languages by influencing their grammar: for example, in terms of what counts as correct usage or syntax (for example, whether there are differences between British English and American English).

Finally, she identifies some features that could be considered ‘errors’ in other languages when they are said to occur in speech from people from England and Wales (e.g., some speakers use double negatives)

1.2 Background To The Study

According to the current educational demands ( Bowerman, C. (2021), the English language has become a tool of communication to facilitate both national and international interaction in business, science, technology, education, foreign relation, etc. English is also an official language and a medium of instruction in universities in Cameroon.

All communication is cultural, it influences the way we speak and gives nonverbal messages. We do not always communicate the same way from day to day, since factors like context, individual personality, and mood interact with a variety of cultural influences we have internalized that influence our choices.

Each of them influences the course of communication and can be responsible for conflict or the escalation of conflict when it led to miscommunicating or misinterpreting. A culturally-fluent approach to conflict means working overtime to understand these and applying this understanding in the order to enhance relationships across differences. Communication is the process by which people exchange their views, meaning or information which they want to transmit.

In cross-cultural communication, people from one culture share their views, information, or messages with people from the other culture. The research, this study shall be looking at those factors such as; family community, human relationships, cultural influence in reading, and linguistic influence in the Indian business environment.

The Influence Of the English Language On Other Languages

English is the most widely spoken language in the world. It is one of the official languages of the United Nations, and it is also one of the most studied languages in the world.

English has a long history of being used as a lingua franca for trade, commerce, diplomacy, and education. As such, it has had a huge impact on other languages around the world.

The influence of the English language on other languages is mainly due to its global spread, which has been facilitated by its use as an international language. This can be attributed to the rise of globalization has led to increased interaction between people from different countries. This has resulted in a growing demand for English as a lingua franca or common language among non-native speakers. The number of non-native speakers of English is expected to increase from 523 million in 2017 to 678 million by 2025 (UNESCO, 2018).

The British Empire was one of the most powerful empires in history. Its colonies and dominions were scattered across continents, including Africa and Asia, where they continue to have an impact today. Countries like India and Malaysia adopted English as their official language after gaining independence from Britain in 1947 and 1957 respectively.

The Influence Of Other Languages On English

French and Norman French had considerable influence on the vocabulary of English, especially when it was used by the upper classes. But the most important source of words from French is due to its use as a literary language during the Middle Ages and later. The vocabulary of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales is largely drawn from French.

Scandinavian Influence On English

Scandinavian languages were introduced into England in two ways: firstly through Danish settlers who settled in northern parts of England, especially in Yorkshire and Lancashire; secondly through Anglo-Saxon kings marrying Norse princesses and bringing Scandinavian ideas into England.

Greek Influence On English

The English alphabet comes from Greek and Latin alphabets with 26 letters instead of 28 because there was no letter for the hard ‘c’ or ‘k’. The letter ‘j’ was later added to represent this sound when it occurred before another consonant (e.g., judge).

1.3 Statement Of Problem

The study of culture and language is an important field of study because it helps us understand how people from different backgrounds interact with one another and how they perceive each other. Many factors influence communication in cross-cultural settings, such as individual characteristics, situational factors, and cultural differences. In this paper, I will focus on how the English language influences cross-cultural communication in the workplace.

1.4 Research Objectives

The main objective of the research is to bring out that English as a foreign language will support cross-cultural communication in this global arena. The empirical research method has been adopted to bring out the suggested outcome.
