THE CHALLENGES FACED BY INTERNALLY DISPLACED WOMEN TO ACCESS BASIC NEEDS IN MILE 16 BUEA
Abstract
Despite the growth in the international recognition of internal displacement, this phenomenon continues to leave women and girls with challenging consequences that remain unattended to through the many universal approaches to reintegration by different relief actors including the UN (UNHCR, 2001).
The objective of this study is to examine some of the challenges faced by internally displaced women in Buea, Mile 16. The study uses descriptive research design. A mixed method approach was employed in which two hundred questionnaires and twenty-eight interviews were administered. Questionnaires and interview guide were used for data collection.
This study adopted both quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze quantitative data while qualitative data was analyzed thematically. The study revealed that internally displaced women go through numerous challenges, from feeding, accommodation and access to health care, children’s education, and other social challenges.
The study therefore concludes that challenges faced by internally displaced women remains a pressing issue that needs to be given considerable attention. Government needs to take proactive steps in providing the needed incentives for internally displaced women. Again, good governance is a remedy to peaceful coexistence.
