CELLPHONES AS A TOOL IN THE LEARNING PROCESS AND ITS IMPACT ON STUDENTS IN THE UNIVERSITY OF BUEA
Abstract
This study examines the origin and evolution of Cellphones. It seeks to examine the importance of Cellphones to the world in general and Cameroon in particular and also the role of cellphones as a tool for teaching and learning process in the University of Buea. It also seeks to examine the impact of cellphones as a tool for learning on students of the University of Buea.
In applying this method, a quantitative approach was adopted. Primary and secondary sauces were consulted. Primary sources included an inventory of informants while secondary sources included published and unpublished documents.
The study has clearly brought out some aspects the evolution of cellphones and its importance to the world in general and Cameroon in particular, the role of cellphones for learning and it impact on students of the University of Buea.
GENERAL INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
A smartphone is a portable computer device that combines mobile telephone function and computing functions in a single unit. Since the invention of smartphone in 1992 with various applications, it has proven to be helpful in the scientific research and teaching in the world in general and on Cameroon in particular.
The smartphone entered the education system in Cameroon with the Covid 19 Pandemic in 2019. The University of Buea was excluded from the use of this tool which had become very important for the circumstances.
Indeed, the University of Buea was created in 1992 and has several study and located in Buea, the historically on the Eastern part of mount Cameroon. It the only English speaking institution of its kind in predominantly French speaking central Africa. An all Limbe, and some 30km to the west, or from the Douala can easily reach it. It is just a toxic dropped off at list 100 France from Mile 17 Buea. It is located exactly at the town of Molyko Buea.
The mission of the University of Buea is to provide opportunities for quality education through teaching and research in an environment that is contusive to such pursuits and in ways that respond to market force concise led in the English speaking tradition, the university of Buea seeks to foster the essence of that system while situating itself within the larger bilingual and multicultural context of Cameroon. The University of Buea welcomes all freshmen to its campus for every academic year
Fako is located in the southwest region of Cameroon. The division is further divided into 5 sub- division is further which includes Buea, Muyuka, Tiko, Limbe and Idenau. Agriculture is the mayor economic activity of the people ,employing a large proportion of the population with tomatoes, plantations, Maize, cassava and Cocoyam as the main or most common food crops poultry pigs, goat and to a lesser extent cattle as domesticated livestock. Below shows the map of Fako mayor cities surrounding this. The local population is estimated at about 400,000 inhabitants, with 63% living in semi- Urban and 37% in rural areas respectively
Statement of the Problem
Since the creation of the University of Buea in 1992 which became operational in 1993, learning was a due process without the use of cellphone. The use of cellphones in the educational sector began around 2011 and was effective by around 2019 following the outbreak of Covid 19. Due to the use of cellphones as a tool of learning it has impacted the University of Buea.
Objective of the study
In other to address this topic we set out some objectives which are main objective and specific objective. The main objective is to point out the impact of cellphones as a tool of learning to the University of Buea. To understand the topic better, we also set out with some specific objectives which are.
- To examine the roles or the significance of cell phones in studies or learning at the University of Buea.
- To examine the impacts of cell phones on students as far as learning is concerned at the University of Buea.
- To trace the origin and the evolution of cell phones from 1992 to 2019 and to examine the importance of cell phones to the world in general and to Cameroon.
