CAMEROON-NIGERIA RELATIONS: THE PURSUIT OF ECONOMIC INTEGRATION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Abstract
This research examines the economic interactions between Cameroon and Nigeria following the resolution of the Bakassi peninsula crisis in light of the International Court of Justice’s ruling in 2002 and the establishment of the Green Tree Accord in 2006.
The two nations enhanced trade in an effort to integrate their economies and foster sustainable development. In this context, the primary aim of this research was to analyze the pursuit of economic integration and sustainable development between Cameroon and Nigeria.
Trade occurred through both official and unofficial channels along their extensive border. Thus, the key argument maintained in this research is that economic integration between Cameroon and Nigeria did not result in sustainable development. The research utilized qualitative methodology for data gathering and analysis.
The study employed both primary and secondary data sources for scrutiny and conclusions. The findings indicated that Cameroon and Nigeria were determined to foster strong economic ties, yet numerous obstacles impeded their attempts to attain sustainable development.
The research suggests that both nations should enhance their border regulations by strengthening joint oversight on customs duties to mitigate illicit trade and ensure security.
