BACTERIOLOGICAL EXAMINATION OF TAP WATER IN THE UNIVERSITY OF BUEA
Abstract
Water is a fundamental human need. Each person on Earth requires at least 20 to 50 litres of clean safe water a day for drinking and simply for keeping themselves clean.
Having access to portable water may be the difference between ill-health and good-health. Polluted water is not just dirty, it is deadly, and about 1.8 million people die every year of diarrheal diseases like cholera. Tens of millions of other people are seriously sickened by a host of water-related ailments many of which are easily preventable.
Thus, a complete bacteriological examination of the main water source for approximately six thousand people mostly students who visit the University of Buea campus on average on a working day is very important.
To evaluate the bacteriological quality of tap water on the University of Buea campus, water samples were collected from the various taps on campus and analyzed for total bacteria count using standard techniques. Bacteria were isolated characterized and identified using standard methods. In addition antibiotic susceptibility profiling of the isolates was done using the disc diffusion method.
Water if contaminated would be shown by the presence of indicator organisms in this case coliform bacteria. It is my wish that this study would ensure the supply and availability of contaminated free drinking water and create more awareness among the people towards sanitation and hygienic conditions for the storage of drinking water.
