APPROACHES TO RESOLVING SPORTS DISPUTES IN CAMEROON
Abstract
Sport dominates our daily lives. Nowadays, sport, particularly football, can be regarded as a highly marketed social activity with a wide range of contacts that are prone to controversies and arguments. As a result, international and national regulations have been developed to control sports relations by specifying the rights and obligations of the state, various organizations, athletes, and other entities in the field.
In Cameroon, in addition to ADR dispute resolution processes including as mediation and arbitration through the CAS, ordinary courts and FECAFOOT judicial entities also have a role in resolving these conflicts.
However, the mechanisms for the settlement of sport disputes have not yielded expected results due to delay in adjudication process and the high level of corruption and match-fixing within the football discipline.
Thus, this study investigates the efficiency of the methods in settling sports conflicts in Cameroon, using football as a case study. In doing so, the study employs qualitative research methodology, including content analysis and interpretation of primary and secondary data. Due to the delicate nature of football, the study used both unstructured interviews and observation to collect data.
The results of this study show that the concept of sport is as old as humans and has grown enormously. Football, in particular, has advanced and is one of the most lucrative disciplines in the world, but it is plagued by day-to-day challenges that have hampered football in Cameroon.
