EVALUATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CYBERSECURITY PROTOCOLS AND PRACTICES IN THE BANKING AND NETWORK INDUSTRY IN REDUCING CYBERSECURITY RISKS IN BUEA
Abstract
This study investigates cybersecurity practices and protocols within the banking and network sector of Buea, Cameroon, with a focus on evaluating their effectiveness in mitigating cybersecurity risks. Through a questionnaire survey administered to 167 respondents, demographic characteristics, employee cybersecurity awareness, practices, and the frequency of cyber-attacks were analysed. Results indicate a high response rate (95.4%) and a balanced gender distribution among respondents. However, varied levels of awareness regarding data security importance and company policies were observed, highlighting potential gaps in communication or understanding.
In terms of cybersecurity practices, respondents exhibited inconsistent password management and document sharing practices, with a concerning number admitting to rarely or never changing passwords. Deployment of advanced security software and participation in network vulnerability assessments also varied, reflecting disparities in organizational security initiatives. Notably, phishing attempts and malware infections were reported with relative frequency, underscoring the persistent threat landscape faced by organizations in the sector.
Hypotheses testing revealed weak correlations between employee cybersecurity awareness, practices, investment in cybersecurity measures, and the frequency of cyber-attacks, suggesting a lack of significant relationships. Regression analysis further confirmed the limited predictive power of the model, indicating that the examined variables do not substantially contribute to explaining the variability in the frequency of cyber-attacks.
