ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY REGULATIONS CONTROLLING CAMEROON’S OIL AND GAS SECTOR
Abstract
With the governmental goal of transforming Cameroon into an emerging economy by 2035, natural resource exploitation is a critical development strategy. The global world is facing unprecedented pressure to manage the use and consumption of natural resources sustainably. Mankind’s voracious thirst for breakthroughs and simplicity has provided enormous potential to produce and develop riches, while also exposing planetary resources to unsustainable levels of consumption.
The discovery and exploitation of crude oil by petroleum firms is an important component of a country’s economic development; nonetheless, these activities have negative consequences that directly harm humanity. It is so critical to have access to the safeguards in place to control the negative environmental health and safety effects of the oil and gas industry’s operations. In this light, the thesis focuses on the legislation and best practices that govern these operations. The study investigates the industry’s environmental protection programs, processes, reporting, and CSR plans.
The study finds that, while the industry has made some efforts, much more needs to be done to align theory and practice. To better protect people’s right to a healthy environment, the thesis recommends a review of government mechanisms to ensure proper implementation of laws, corporate social responsibility, environmental health and safety sound technology, improving oil and gas management and storage, and procedures to identify potential hazards in order to avoid environmental health and safety hazards.
