GENDER ROLES AND ORGANISATIONAL CULTURE AS DETERMINANTS OF PUBLIC RELATIONS OUTCOMES
Abstract
The objective of this study is to understand why the outcomes of public relations officers vary and to find out if it is a function of gender roles and organisational culture. Using the conceptual model’s four public relations roles prescription notably; (1) expert prescriber (2) Communication technician, (3)Communication facilitator (4) problem-solving process facilitator to understand role adoption in public relations and how that affects public relations outcomes. In the same vein, Organisations operate under four main cultural dimensions notably power culture dimension, role culture dimension, achievement culture dimension and support culture dimension.
The qualitative approach was used in this study. An interview guide was used for data collection and thematic analysis used to analyze and interpret the data. A total of 11 public relations personnel were interviewed with the shortest interview being under 13 minutes and the longest being over 25 minutes. The findings of the research suggest that pre-established gender roles and organisational culture affect public relations outcomes negatively and positively.
Organisations operating under a strictly power culture dimension had more unfavorable public relations outcomes. Pre-established gender roles as stated by one interviewee did influence her hiring process and role prescription, but that view is not shared by the majority. The findings suggest that pre-established gender roles are evident in public relations role prescription and execution as women as seen to take up more communication technician roles as previous research suggest.
But in recent times all these are changing and women are taking up more challenging jobs. But pre-established gender roles did not influence their hiring process. In summary pre-established gender roles are being traded for skill and merit and that now affects public relations outcomes, while public relation officers in power culture dimension led organisations face unfavorable public relation outcomes compared to public relation officers operating in other culture dimensions.
