COMPLIANCE WITH HYGIENE AND SAFETY REGULATIONS IN THE OIL AND GAS SECTOR IN CAMEROON
Abstract
Oil and gas resources are unquestionably the lifeblood of the contemporary economy, and they are currently among the world’s most important energy resources. The Cameroonian economy relies on the oil and gas industry for money and fuel.
However, oil and gas activities have the potential to endanger life, property, and the environment if not properly monitored and regulated. Measures and methods aimed to avoid, regulate, mitigate, or eliminate dangers in the oil and gas business have frequently proven ineffective due to a disrespect for hygiene and safety regulations.
Against this context, this research critically investigates compliance with hygiene and safety requirements in Cameroon’s oil and gas sector, as well as the extent to which these measures are applied in SONARA. The researcher used qualitative research methods, which included a thorough content analysis of both primary and secondary sources of material, as well as interviews and personal observations.
Findings revealed the existence of commendable legal and institutional mechanisms aimed at ensuring compliance with hygiene and safety regulations at SONARA. It was further revealed that the management of SONARA has also committed herself genuinely to the implementation of hygiene safety measures.
Despite this, the latest fire incident at SONARA on Friday, May 31, 2019, as well as other severe hygiene and safety concerns, demonstrate that SONARA’s management’s safety procedures are inadequate.
It is consequently advised that the management of SONARA assures regular machine maintenance, acquire and install high grade machines, import efficient and effective generators, carries out routine training on hygiene and safety, and enforce the rules governing hygiene and safety.
