CHALLENGES FACED BY INTERNALLY DISPLACED WOMEN IN BOLIFAMBA BUEA
Abstract
The global number of internally displaced individuals is currently increasing as violent conflicts persist. The United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon (2014), stated that displacement is arguably the most critical humanitarian issue facing the planet.
An overwhelming majority of Internally Displaced Persons are reported to be women and children. The aim of this research was to explore the challenges encountered by internally displaced women in Bolifamba, Buea, South West Region of Cameroon. The study utilized a descriptive research design.
A mixed-methods approach was used, involving the distribution of two hundred questionnaires and conducting twenty-eight interviews. Questionnaires and an interview guide were employed for data gathering. This research applied both quantitative and qualitative analytical methods.
Descriptive statistics were utilized to evaluate quantitative data, while qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The findings indicated that some internally displaced women moved to Mile 16, Bolifamba due to insecurity, physical threats, and loss of lives, and currently experience a lack of access to basic necessities such as food, shelter, education, and healthcare services. Many of these women have lost their livelihoods and are left to navigate the challenges of securing basic needs for survival independently.
Consequently, this research concludes that the issues faced by internally displaced women remain a significant concern that requires considerable attention.
The government must take proactive measures to offer essential support for internally displaced women. Additionally, effective governance is essential for fostering peaceful coexistence.
