CORPORATE SOCIAL MEDIA USE AND ITS EFFECTIVENESS IN INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER LEARNING INSTITUTIONS IN CAMEROON
Abstract
Higher education institutions are increasingly utilizing social media for various purposes. There is a lack of information regarding how the University of Buea employs its social media accounts. This research explored the corporate use of social media at the University of Buea.
Three theoretical frameworks were utilized to bolster the literature: Technological Acceptance Model, Diffusion of Innovation Theory, and Uses and Gratifications Theory. The study incorporated a mixed-methods approach that included a semi-structured interview, qualitative content analysis, and a survey.
The head of the Public Relations Department at UB was interviewed, the university’s social media platforms were content analyzed, and 330 students participated in the survey. Significant findings revealed that the university utilizes its social media platforms for communication, promotion, image enhancement, and engagement. However, the PR department encounters several challenges in managing these platforms.
These challenges include the lack of a social media budget, weak network connectivity, limited interactivity on the platforms, and negative comments from some social media users. Moreover, the quantitative results indicated minimal student interaction with the university’s social media platforms.
The majority of students are not active followers of the university’s social media (54.6%), seldom share content (69.1%), comment (66.4%), like posts (48.5%), and only (43.7%) relay information from the platforms to their classmates.
