DETERMINANTS OF THE SIZE OF THE GHOST ECONOMY OF CAMERON
Abstract
Transitioning from Ambiguous to Distinct: a thorough examination of the factors influencing CAMEROON’S underground economy.” Determinants of taxation on the magnitude of the shadow economy in the southwest region of Cameroon.
Its primary aim is to analyze the factors affecting the scale of the shadow economy of tax revenue in the South West region of Cameroon. Additionally, its specific objectives include assessing the impact of the Informal Sector’s size on the shadow economy in the South West region of Cameroon, exploring the influence of unemployment on the shadow economy of the South West region of Cameroon, and investigating how the GDP per Capita of the South West affects the shadow economy in that region.
Data regarding the size of the Informal sector, real GDP, and unemployment rate were obtained from various government bodies, including NIS, Tax, and the Ministry of Finance, as well as the Regional Tax Center of South West Limbe, covering the period from 1991 to 2022. Correlation and regression analyses were employed as research designs to evaluate the relationships among these variables.
The results indicated that the size of the informal sector positively impacts the size of the shadow economy in the South West region of Cameroon, while real GDP also positively influences the size of the ghost economy in that region. Conversely, the unemployment rate significantly negatively affects the size of the shadow economy in the South West region of Cameroon. Based on these findings, the study advises policymakers to focus on reducing unemployment rates. One potential strategy for achieving this objective is to enhance investments in job creation initiatives, such as public works or apprenticeship programs. These initiatives can equip individuals with the skills and training necessary to secure meaningful employment, thereby diminishing the size of the shadow economy.
Another policy that could help reduce unemployment rates is the expansion of social safety nets, such as unemployment benefits or welfare programs. These programs can provide people with the financial support they need to find new employment and avoid falling into the ghost economy.
