CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background Of The Study
Effective communication is crucial in teaching and learning, and nonverbal communication is an essential component of this process. Nonverbal communication comprises body language, facial expressions, gestures, and tone of voice, and it can significantly influence students’ learning outcomes. English language teachers in the Buea Municipality may use nonverbal communication to enhance their teaching effectiveness and students’ academic performance.
However, the extents to which teachers use nonverbal communication and its impact on students’ academic performance in the Buea Municipality has not been well explored. Therefore, this undergraduate research project aims to investigate the use of nonverbal communication by English language teachers and its effects on students’ academic performance in the Buea Municipality.
1.2 Problem Statement
The use of nonverbal communication by teachers in the Buea Municipality has not been adequately explored, and its effects on students’ academic performance are not well understood. It is essential to understand the extent to which teachers use nonverbal communication in teaching English and how it affects students’ academic performance.
Therefore, this undergraduate research project aims to investigate the use of nonverbal communication by teachers in teaching English and its effects on students’ academic performance in the Buea Municipality.

- What nonverbal communication cues do English language teachers use in the Buea Municipality?
- How does English language teachers’ use of nonverbal communication affect students’ academic performance in the Buea Municipality?
- What are the perceptions of teachers and students regarding the use of nonverbal communication in teaching English in the Buea Municipality?
