TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES IN AGRICULTURAL CORPORATIONS IN CAMEROON
Abstract
This research project examines the training and development practices within the Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC), a key player in the country’s agricultural sector. The study aims to assess the effectiveness of these practices in enhancing the skills and competencies of CDC employees.
Through a questionnaire administered to CDC employees, data was collected on demographics and training-related responses. The findings reveal a moderate level of awareness among participants regarding CDC’s training programs. However, there is room for improvement in the programs’ effectiveness in addressing the specific needs and challenges of the agricultural sector.
The utilization of training and development resources is reported to be moderate, with identified challenges and barriers in accessing and utilizing these resources effectively.
Based on the findings, recommendations are provided to optimize the utilization of training and development resources within CDC. These include enhancing the frequency and accessibility of training resources, addressing the identified challenges, and tailoring programs to better align with the needs of the agricultural sector. This study contributes to the existing knowledge by shedding light on the current state of training and development practices within CDC. It emphasizes the importance of continuous evaluation and improvement to enhance employee skills and competencies in agricultural operations.
Additionally, the study provides insights into the utilization of training resources and identifies areas for further investigation. To advance the field, future research could consider a larger sample size and include a broader range of agricultural corporations in Cameroon. Exploring additional factors that contribute to the effectiveness of training and development practices would provide a comprehensive understanding of human resource development in the agricultural sector.
Overall, this research highlights the significance of training and development in agricultural corporations like CDC and underscores the need for continuous improvement to enhance employee skills and competencies. Ultimately, these efforts contribute to the growth and development of the agricultural sector in Cameroon.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The agricultural sector in Cameroon has played a vital role in the country’s economy for decades. With its diverse sub-sectors, including rubber, oil palm, and banana cultivation, the sector has contributed significantly to employment, export revenues, and food security (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, 2020). However, the sector faces numerous challenges in the context of the evolving global economy.
As the world’s population continues to grow and the demand for food rises, agricultural corporations in Cameroon, like the Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC), are confronted with the dual challenge of increasing productivity while ensuring sustainability and efficiency (FAO, 2020). To thrive in this dynamic environment, it is crucial for organizations to prioritize the effective management and development of their human resources (HR).
The role of HR in agricultural corporations has gained recognition as a key driver of success (CDC, 2019). Competent and skilled employees are essential for enhancing productivity, quality, and sustainability in agricultural operations (Meyerson, 2018). Furthermore, in an era characterized by technological advancements and evolving market dynamics, training and developing the workforce has become a strategic imperative for agricultural corporations to remain competitive (Ofori-Sarpong et al., 2022).
However, training and development practices in the agricultural sector, particularly in developing regions like Cameroon, face significant limitations and obstacles. Outdated training methods, inadequate resources, and a lack of strategic HR planning have hampered the growth and competitiveness of agricultural organizations (Ndimanya et al., 2018). Consequently, there is an urgent need to investigate and improve the training and development practices within the agricultural sector in Cameroon.
This study aims to address these challenges by focusing on the training and development of human resources in the context of the Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC). CDC, as one of the largest agricultural corporations in Cameroon, represents a significant case study for understanding the training and development practices within the agricultural sector.
By examining CDC’s training and development practices, this research seeks to gain valuable insights into enhancing HR practices in agricultural corporations in Cameroon. Specifically, the study aims to assess the adequacy of existing training programs, evaluate the availability of resources, and examine the presence of strategic HR planning within CDC. Through a comprehensive analysis, the study will identify areas for improvement and propose practical solutions to enhance training and development initiatives within CDC and similar agricultural corporations.
The findings of this study will extend beyond CDC, contributing to the development of effective training and development strategies for human resources in agricultural corporations in Cameroon. By addressing the gaps and challenges in HR practices, the study aims to facilitate sustainable agricultural growth, enhance productivity and efficiency, and foster innovation within the sector (Ndjomo & Tsafack, 2021). Ultimately, the research endeavors to support the development of a skilled and competent workforce capable of driving the success of the agricultural sector and contributing to the overall economic development of Cameroon.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The effective training and development of human resources within the Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC) face several challenges that impede its progress and hinder the corporation’s ability to optimize its workforce. This section outlines two key problems that affect the training and development of human resources within CDC.
Political instability, as a result of the ongoing socio-political crises in Cameroon, poses a significant obstacle to the training and development of human resources in agricultural corporations like CDC. The country’s political environment has been marred by civil unrest and conflicts, which have disrupted normal business operations and created an uncertain climate for training initiatives (Ndimanya et al., 2018). The resulting instability has hampered the corporation’s ability to implement effective training programs and provide a conducive learning environment for its employees. The adverse effects of political instability include limited access to training resources, reduced investment in human capital development, and difficulties in attracting and retaining skilled employees (Ojong & Ademola, 2020).
Another challenge faced by CDC in training and developing its human resources is the lack of innovation and modern agricultural facilities. The unavailability of state-of-the-art machinery, equipment, and tools required for modern agricultural practices hinders the corporation’s ability to provide comprehensive and up-to-date training experiences (Sarangi et al., 2018). The absence of innovative technologies, such as advanced irrigation systems, precision farming techniques, and digital agriculture tools, limits the employees’ exposure to modern farming methods and inhibits their skill development (Kashyap & Rangnekar, 2017). Without access to these resources, the training and development process within CDC becomes outdated, compromising the corporation’s ability to enhance productivity, efficiency, and sustainability.
Addressing these problems is crucial for the effective training and development of human resources within CDC. Overcoming the challenges posed by political instability and the lack of innovation and modern agricultural facilities will enable CDC to establish a robust training framework that aligns with the corporation’s goals and enables the workforce to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge. By addressing these issues, CDC can enhance its human capital and drive growth, productivity, and competitiveness within the agricultural sector in Cameroon.
1.3 Research Questions
1.3.1 Main research question
