THREE-MONTH INDUSTRIAL PLACEMENT AT SAINT BERNARD HIGH SCHOOL MOLYKO BUEA
Abstract
This report presents the summary of end of internship studies carried out at Saint Bernard High School, Molyko-Buea, with the aim of gaining a more practical approach of the theoretical concepts learned at school. Primary research method was collected by the researcher from the various activities that were conducted during the internship.
Some weakness and threats that were observed during the period such as low salary paid to workers, the staff room combined with the discipline office and the school bus that was packed down without any use. The intern recommends that the institution should the salaries of workers, separate the discipline office from the staff room and make repairs and use of the school bus, not only to ease activities but also to serve as publicity for the school.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Internship
Internship is a program meant to assess the intern’s ability in applying the theoretical knowledge learnt in the classroom in a practical situation in their respective fields ahead of real job opportunities as well as increasing their skills and accustoming interns to the working environment in their various fields of work.
It is an activity that is most often performed by university students within a given period of time as from two to three months respectfully with aid of a field supervisor, who accompany the student to obtain a first-hand experience of working in a company or in an institution.
In the part of an institution or company, internship provides an opportunity for intern to carry out daily activities which will increase the productivity level and generate income to the company or institution. For the employees in the company or institution, internship provides a period of rest since the interns are allowed to performed tasks which were initially done by employees under the supervision of their supervisors and also the employees.
1.2 Objectives of the Internship.
- It exposes the intern to a more practical approach of the theoretical concepts learned at school.
- It enables the intern blend theory and practical in the field of studies.
- It enables the intern acquire knowledge on entrepreneurial skills from the company.
- It exposes the intern to professional role models or mentors who will provide the student with support in the early stages of the internship and example of behaviours in the intern’s workplace.
- Internship develops a solid work ethics and professional demeanour, as well as a commitment to ethical conduct and social responsibility.
- It observes and participates in business operations and decision making.
- It tests intern’s interest and aptitude in a particular career before permanent commitments are made.
- It provides the intern an opportunity to develop attitudes conducive to effective interpersonal relationships.
- Internship provides the intern the opportunity to create a professional network with professionals in his/her field.
1.3 Usefulness of Internship
- Job Experience: In internship, you learn about a career field from inside and decide if it is the right career for you or not. You will gain first class industrial knowledge from the organisation and from professionals.
- Research Experience: In scientific fields, for example, an internship might consist of assisting with research. This provides a means for one to test the research skills you learned in the university courses in a practical setting.
- Mentorship: The most valuable mentor relationships often start with a personal connection that enhances the experience for both the mentor and the mentee. Working as an intern may allow you to meet a potential mentor naturally and may establish a relationship that helps guide your career path. Internship helps to create a situation where your relationship develops highly, even if you end up working full time somewhere else.
- Help guide career goals: During your education, you may study a variety of subjects to determine your interests. For some, a university degree will help you determine what kind of career you want to have. For others, studying offers a diverse set of experiences that presents multiple career options. An internship can give you job experience by introducing you to daily rigors and tasks without a firm commitment to that precise career track. It can help decide if certain jobs fit your personality and your talents and allow you to meet people who can give you career advice and guidance.
- Build a strong Resume: Job experience enables you to fill out your resume with honesty and specificity. Not only will you be able to add the duties and projects from your internship to the experience section of your resume, but you will also be able to more clearly describe your objective for a permanent position.
1.4: Methodology of the Internship
Internship placement and evaluation forms were given at school to the students. The forms bore the name of the institution for authentication to apply in organisations or institutions. The methodology of this internship program makes use of both primary and secondary sources of data. Majority of primary data were obtained from discussions with staff of the institution.
One on one discussion was often held with the principal and with most of the teaching staff in which I was opportune to collect some information patterning the operations of the institution. Secondary source of data were obtained from the reports generated by the various departmental heads. I equally used the internet as a secondary source of data to be able to know how other secondary schools operate.
1.5 Internship Placement
During the period from the 13th September to 18th December 2021, I was placed by the principal to work under the department of Mathematics so as to understand the in depth of the activities performed. I taught mathematics in Forms one, two, three, five, lower sixth and upper sixth. I also taught Business mathematics in the commercial department of the institution.
1.6 Structure of the Report
This activity report is structured into five (05) chapters. Chapter one (01) is introduction and constitutes the background to internship, objective of internship, usefulness of internship, internship placement and structure of the report. Chapter two (02) is description of institution which involves historical information, location of institution, activities of the institution and management structure of the institution.
Chapter three (03) focuses on the activities carried out during internship. Chapter four (04) focuses on the strength and witness of the organization, lessons learnt and difficulties faced. Chapter five (05) looks at the summary of activities during the internship, conclusions, limits and possible recommendations.
1.6 Operational Definitions of terms
Internship: A professional learning experience that offers practical work experience related to a student field of study or career interest.
Intern: A student or trainee who works, sometimes without pay in order to gain work experience or satisfy requirements for qualification.
Correspondence: This is communication by exchanging formal letters. Letters written to SBHS students are done in the secretariat through correspondence.
Administrative Assistant: Someone employed by an individual or an office to assist with correspondence, keep records, make appointments and carry out similar tasks.
Mails: These are enclosed letters with stamp to be delivered.

2.1 Historical Background of Saint Bernard High School, (SBHS) Molyko Buea.
Saint Bernard High School, (SBHS) Molyko Buea, a comprehensive high school was founded by Dr. Bernard Fomba, in October 2020. The school opened its doors to students of both commercial and general department, from Forms 1 to upper sixth, with an enrolment of 247 students.
SBHS is located at the former HIMS Campus, Garden Park Molyko, opposite Orange Cameroon, Buea. The Motto of the school is Knowledge-Fidelity-Integrity.
SBHS is a secondary high school which impacts sound moral and academic knowledge to students who are fortunate to be part of it. It offers both general and commercial education. It also organises academic seminars for its staff to be better equipped them in carrying out their functions. The proprietor of the school, Dr. Bernard Fomba, donates a number of scholarships to internally displaced, the handicaps, those from very poor background and those who show proof of high moral academic excellence.
2.1.1 The Mission of SBHS
The mission of SBHS is to develop the character and personality of every student. The school is out to give holistic education to the students so that they leave as youths capable of making outstanding progress in the society.
