A TWO MONTHS INDUSTRIAL PLACEMENT WITH THE REGIONAL DELEGATION OF PUBLIC HEALTH BUEA
Executive summary
An internship is a vital exercise expected to be carried out by students as a requirement for their HPD exams which will enable the student to have a better understanding and help to broaden their knowledge and expose the student to the competitive world and help or make a comparison between practical world and academic theories so as to better improve and oriented a professional carrier with he or she can be very useful to the immediate environment and society.
During the interns stay at the Regional Delegation Of Public health, a variety of activities were carried out which will be grouped accordingly. The introductory part of this exercise comprises of the general introduction to internship which includes; the definition of internship, aims and objectives of the study and some operational definition of terms used in the course of writing this report followed by an analytical description of the organization’s background, aims and objectives of the organization as well the organizational structure and their various functions. After which a summary of the general activities carried out by the intern in the various department and equally activities carried out within a specific area, comparison between theories from the school and practical learned from both in and out of the organization.
Furthermore, an evaluation of internship that is individual’s evaluation and organizations evaluation is done and a recommendations, that is organizations recommendations, to students and conclusions of the internship exercise.
CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Introduction to internship
As part of Higher Professional Diploma (H.P.D) completion from the Higher Institute Of Professional Studies, Students are required to undergo a training or internship to groom the students of HIPs in general and Human Resource in particular gain or again or acquire skills and experience to relate to classroom theory.
As such I NAGWAH LIZETTE, matricle no HIPs/0005/HRM/14 have completed a two month internship program at the South West Regional Delegation of Public Health located at Tuburg Junction Buea. In this report I will share my experiences for the period of July 07/2015 to 14th September 2015.
An internship is an integral part of a professional education for which there are set objectives to enable and facilitate the internship process. Therefore, and internship may be defined as opportunity offered to a worker or student to understand and be able to make a comparison with practical world and academic theories so as to better improve and oriented a professional carrier with which he or she can be very useful to the immediate environment and society. It is a tool that can be used to evaluate a student understanding with regard to classroom theory.
1.2 Objectives/aims of the study
With much expectation as an intern I have as objectives the following;
- Know how recruitment and selection is being carried out and coordinated.
- Understand the organization structure and culture.
- Acquire skills in job design and job satisfaction
- Know how discipline and grievance takes place in the organization.
- Have an understanding of the various types of conflict and how they are being resolved
- Understand how planning and control takes place in the organization
- Know the right and obligation of employees
- Understand individuals differences in the organization
- Know the flow of communication in the DPH.
- To be able to manage diversity in culture among subordinates
- To be able to standout as professionals in the competitive arena of the business world.
- An objective of this study is to find out the reason for employees turnover and provide possible remedies to curb this situation
- To understand how organizations practices can boost employee’s productivity.
1.3 Operational definition of terms
- EMPLOYEE; A person who is paid to work for somebody. The organization has over 110 employees
- MANAGERS; A person who carries out the basic management function of planning, organizing directing and many more.
- COOPERATION; Referring to a large company.
- SUCCESION OF DUTY; This refers to the day an employee ceases to work
- DELEGATION OF COMPETENCE; This means assigning a person equivalent to your position to represent you in a seminar or meeting.
- REPRESENTATIVE OF SIGNATURE; Request a person to sign on behalf of another usually the leader on issues of finance but not in all cases.
- CODE POWER; This refers to a percentage of money generated from hospital shared among personnel’s

- PMTCT: Prevention of Mother To Child Transmission of HIV
- NGOs: Non-Governmental Organization
- WHO: World Health Organization

2.1 Historical background
The ministry of Public Health does not have a specific date of its creation but health being a sensitive issue, might have stated even before independence. Ministries have come and gone, delegates have come and gone but here in the Regional of public Health South West Region, the chain of delegate 2007 are: Drchuwanga John and Presently DrMbomeNjie Victor.
The delegation is a deconcentrated unit aimed at lightening the burden of the central government which in the case is the ministry of public health. The governor represent each ministry in the region, therefore the delegate is also answerable to the governor.
The delegation is headed by Delegates who is appointed by the central government in the person of DrMbomeNjie Victor Under him the delegation is divided into two services that is Service of Sanitary, information and Planning of and the Service of General affairs. These services are led by a chief of service also appointed by the honorable minster of Health.
2.2 Aims and objectives of the organization
The objective of the Delegation varies from one department to another since these departments are meant to carryout different activities.
Bureau of training
- One of the objective of this service is to create partners who carryout health activities within the south west region.
- Training of competent health personnel within the south west region
- The preparation of a collaboration letter with local organizations is an important objective of this service.
- As an objective, this service prepares an action plan with regard to the writing of a certification exam
- It ensures that organizations that are seeking for collaboration letters are actually existing
UNICEF
Mr. Akono Jacob is the representative of UNICEF for the south west region and the objective of this service include the following
- To ensure that vaccines and drugs are distributed by trained and competent personnel’s during campaigns
- Educating young Cameroonians with the help of funds gotten from donor organizations
- Sponsoring health activities within the various districts
- Ensures that campaigns are carried out to enhance a healthy population.
- NTDs
- This service has the following objectives
- To fight against neglected topical diseases within the south west region
- Ensures that metizan and abendazole are distributed to fight against filarial
- An objective of this service is to receive material for campaign and distribute to other districts
- It monitors and supervises the proper distribution and intake of these drugs (abendazole and metizan)
- Give report to the minister on how campaigns were carried out.
SERVICE OF GENERAL AFFAIRES (SGA)
This department has as objective to ensure that suitable and qualified candidate fill vacancies in the organization.
- Provide the training of employees
- Provide a safe working environment for employees
- Increase productivity by efficiency and effectiveness
- Improve on productivity by job specification and description
- Train employees who can compete in the world’s competitive market
- Diagnose the causes of turnover and possible remedies to them
