THE EFFECT OF SOIL FERTILITY ON YAM PRODUCTIVITY
Abstract
Dioscorea rotundata also commonly known as white yam or guinea yam, is a plant species that belong to the dioscoreaceae family. It is a climbing vine that produces large tuberous roots that are commonly consumed as a food source. Dioscorea rotundata is believed to have originated in West Africa, specifically it is said to have originated in the region that includes Nigeria, Ghana and Cameroon.
Production of this white faces a lot of problems ranging from, deterioration, soil infertility, storage facilities, poor seed quality and / or seed unavailability, pest and diseases. Among all these constraints the major problem affecting white yam production in Cameroon is inadequate seed supply of seeds.
This research was therefore carried out to evaluate the best soil amendment that will effectively Increase seed production of white yam Dioscorea rotundata) through the use of yam mini sett (small pieces of yam tubers used as propagating material).
The layout used for this research was the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) having four block (replicates) and the experimental units that is the different treatment combination randomized within each block and the mini sett planted at a distance of 25cm apart at a planting rate was one plant per stand.
The soil was amended using organic fertilizer (poultry manure), Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium (NPK) fertilizer, microbes, and beds not amended serving as control. The soil amended with poultry manure had the greatest effects since the plants had the highest number of leaves and branches.
