THE ROLE OF PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL IN THE BUEA MUNICIPALITY
Abstract
This study was designed to investigate “the role of Parenting Involvement on the academic performance of secondary school students in the Buea Municipality” The objectives that were used for the study were;. to examine how parental guidance affects students’ academic Performance in secondary schools in the Buea municipality, to understand how parental motivation affects students’ academic Performance in secondary schools in the Buea municipality and to examine the extent to which parental expectations and aspirations affect students’ academic performance in secondary schools. The descriptive survey design was used.
The sample size of the study was 100 students selected from three secondary schools in Buea municipality. The questionnaire was used to obtain information from correspondents and data were analyzed using percentages and frequencies.
The following results were obtained; it was observe that parental guidance has a positive impacts on students’ academic achievement of secondary school students, From the findings, it is clear that parental motivation has a greater influence of academic achievement positively, and lastly it was equally discovered that parental expectation have a positive effects on the academic achievements of secondary school students in the Buea municipality and lastly from the result obtain from the findings, it was discovered that social interaction have a positive effect on the academic performance of secondary school students in the Buea municipality.
Based on the above result, the following recommendations were obtained; Parents should diversify their sources of income to be able to provide fund for their children’s schooling. Parents should equally realize the importance of using rewards and other measures to motivate their children.
Parents should endeavor to school fees to their ward regularly, Parents should endeavor to provide learning materials to their ward regularly, Schools should implement programs to encourage parent-child discourse in the early grades, and make concerted efforts to maintain these communication lines between parents and children throughout the child’s schooling career.
