PROBLEMS OF TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background To The Study
Teaching English is important as it plays an important role in success. When good and sufficient English is not used in the classroom, it causes inefficiency. Thus, English teachers needs to ensure there is the adequate teaching of the language in a supportive environment and bring a better learning of the language in the classroom.
Thus, it is important for teachers to master the language and have knowledge of the teaching skills needed. The choice of good strategies used by English teachers in teaching helps both the teachers and students to present their ideas.
Most of the poor performances of students in secondary schools in learning English language centers on the fact that the teachers sometimes lack the adequate knowledge of the correct strategies needed in teaching them. Some students are to be blamed for not being able to master the language, as they put little or no effort in learning it because they think they know the language.
Poor performance in the language increases the chances of failure in examinations, since it is the medium used in most Anglo- Saxon secondary schools and universities in teaching most subjects. English is the leading language that fosters communication in some governmental institutes, society and the globalized world. It is the official language in most countries and over 200 million people in the world speak it. It is important to know the language since it is used in finding work and facilitates friendship making across the world.
English is seen as a difficult language because it involves some grammatical rules to be followed and needs a lot of time to understand them. It becomes difficult to learn fluently. English as a second language seems unfamiliar to most of the students and difficult to master. So it is important that when being taught, the teachers are expected to motivate them in learning the language, include various methods or strategies in teaching them and skills in learning the language.
It is also seen that teachers do not only use poor old skilled methods of teaching like recitation and memorization techniques, and flipped classroom method of teaching. But also tend to use a multimodal method which has not been used.
These multimodal methods are methods which are all used at the same time. Some of these methods include; visual learning, kinesthetic learning, reading and writing and audio learning. This does not go in line with students’ desired method of learning the language. This causes them not to develop interest the language.
According to views in the year (2016-2020), students of G B H S Kumba Cameroon have shown that they focused more on speaking Pidgin English in class, school and out of class which destroys language competency. Despite all efforts made to discipline them, there is still no improvement.
1.2 Statement Of The Problem
English, as a means of communication and teaching requires the need for well-trained teachers who have quality skills, measures and strategies while teaching the language.
Being suspicious that the educational performance of secondary school students in G B H S Kumba declined because of the poor strategies that English teachers used and the lack of interest from students in paying attention in class, has caused a declined in English proficiency to master the language. The researcher equally seeks to find out whether the abundance of other languages constitutes a challenge that influences the performance of English.
1.3 Purpose Of The Study
Since teaching English language is not easy and requires trained teachers who have the ability to use better methods and approaches in teaching, with the aim of teaching the lesson at the understanding level of students.
Some poor approaches like using of multimodal methods, old skilled methods, flipped classroom, and lack of interest from the students has hindered the mastery of the language and has affected students’ performance and failure in exams.
The aim and purpose of this study is to find out the problems facing the teaching of English language in (G B H S) Kumba secondary schools and possible ways to solve these problems.
This study will find out the following:
- To identify the problems facing the teaching of the English language and its possible solution to the problems.
- To find out the environment that will be comfortable in both teaching and learning of the language.
- To Create awareness in the minds of the teachers of the adequate skills used in teaching the English language.
