PREVALENCE OF VIOLENCE AND RISK FACTORS ON HEALTH CARE PERSONNEL IN CAMEROON
Abstract
BACKGROUND: According to the WHO, violence is the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against a person, or against a group or community that either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, mal development or deprivation. Violence in health institutions is from patients, their relatives, or from another individuals. It can be a verbal or behavioral threat that poses a risk to health care workers, a physical assault, or a sexual assault.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the level of violence against health care workers ,the attributes of healthcare staff who are at high risk and its consequences in health care institutions in the Fako Division.
METHOD: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out from February 2020 to May 2020 in health facilities in the Fako division. Main outcome measures included demographic data of the respondents, incidence of and risk factors contributing to workplace violence. Data was analyzed using SPSS VERSION 23 , level of significance was set at p < 0.05. Multivariate logistic regression was utilized to determine risk factors for WPV among HCP Results: Of the 394participants, 71.1% experienced workplace violence by patients or their relatives in the past year; 23.4% were physical abused while 67.0% verbal abuse, and 7.1% were sexual harassed. Risk factors included being a nurse, within the age groups 21-25 years or 31- 35 years, female, working in the Public /government sector or missionary sector , interacting with patients ,Working in shift and being moderately worried about WPV.
CONCLUSION: WPV is highly prevalent among healthcare professionals in the Fako division with Verbal abuse more prevalent compared to physical and sexual assault. Psychological and emotional aspects (e.g.., anger and fear) are factors on which violence has the most negative impact and violence prevention. There is a need for strict policies in hospitals to protect the workers.
