CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Higher institutions better prepare their students for the world of work and practicum continues to remain an important means by which this expectation is addressed. Practicum constitutes an integral part of many courses in higher education and it manifest in several different forms depending on the discipline.

Practicum in Educational Psychology is a higher institution course that is designed to give students supervised practical application of what they’ve learned in class to a real environment. This course involves activities emphasizing the practical application of theory especially one in which a student gains experience in a field of study carried out under supervision.

This practicum was carried out in Government High School (G.H.S)  Buea Town. In an attempt to provide an overview of this practicum, this report seeks to address the rationale for the practicum, the historical and geographical nature of the school, the relationship among students and teachers teaching methods, aids, strategies, teachers and students characteristics, problems encountered and recommendations.

Purpose Of Practicum

The objectives of the practicum was to observe the theory learned in class, how it is being put into practice and to acquire some knowledge and skills in the teaching and learning processes. Some of the specific objectives includes;

• To observe the general environment of the school and its features.
• To observe the relationship between teachers-students, teachers-teachers, students- students, teachers-intern and students-intern.
• To observe the teachers and students in the teaching and learning process.
• To identify the difficulties faced by the school, teachers and students.
• To suggest solutions to the problems encountered.
• To give recommendations and conclusion.

Description Of School Location

Government High School (G.H.S) Buea Town is situated nearby to Health District and Buea Town Stadium.

History Of The School

GHS Buea Town was created by ministerial decree No 2005/2453 pm 27/06/2005

In 2012 another prime ministerial decree no 2012 transformed the institution into a second cycle institution.

The school went operational on the 14/9/2005 following ministerial decree no 492/05/MINESEC of 13/09/2005 appointing Madam Georgiana Sango as the principal of the school. The school effectively took off on the 20/09/2005 with thirty five students and two teachers in their temporary premises at the old Government domestic science centre behind the warders Barracks in Buea. However, the staffing situation and students enrolment changed for the better as the days went by.

The pioneer teachers were;

-Andah Gladys Netonoh

-Nkembi Mbowoh Lucia

-Moky nee Mary Ndumbe

-Nji Isalah Mbah

-Nobert Nkafu Fomenky

The vice principals were

-Vefonge Emilia

-Ekane Peter

The students population increased to 1053 students that is 473 boys and 580 girls.

In 2017/ 2018 academic year, Madam Mokombo Mary Enjema replaced the pioneer principal.

Today, the students’ enrolment is 1301 students and 26 administrators. That is the principal, 7 Vice principals, 6 senior discipline masters, Bursar, Chief of service for sports, 1 Chief of service for guidance counseling.

However, the staffing situation and students’ enrolment changed for the better as the days went by. Upon the completion of my practicum exercise a new principal was appointed in the person of madam Etode Sophie.
