Abstract

Population increase and housing challenges is a critical issue in Limbe 1 Municipality as it is in many other parts of the world.  Limbe  is a home to a diverse population of people who rely on economic  and social activities other forms of livelihoods for their food and income. However, the area is facing several challenges that threaten the Populations.

It was an investigatory and exploratory study that adopted the mixed research design using the qualitative and the quantitative techniques. The main sources of primary data were questionnaires, interview guides, direct filed observations and interrogations.

The review of published articles, magazines and online libraries were the main sources of secondary data. Information was collected from 50 persons who were selected through the simple random sampling techniques.

Results analyzed through the inferential and the descriptive statistical techniques on the qualitative and quantitative data revealed that the Limbe 1 Municipality faces the issue of population  growth and housing challenge   resulting to many challenges.

The Population growth  in limbe 1 Municipality has become a major concern for policymakers, researchers and other stakeholders. The issue is complex and multifaceted, and it requires a comprehensive approach to address it effectively. This approach involve a range of interventions, including improving affordable housing scheme, and promoting the high standards of living by giving housing subsidies.

  CHAPTER ONE

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

LIMBE formerly Victoria,town and port located in the southern Cameroon it lies along Ambas Bay in the gulf of Guiniea at the southern foot of mount Cameroon , just south of Buea .the town was founded in the year 1858 by Baptist Missionaries and several Historical movement dating from the colonial 1890s that have been presented .

The Study is basically here to give us and explainnatory part to us about the increase in population and the challenges housing been observed which was been gotten from the growth of the population. Limbe is an emerging industrial city been experiencing a rapid urbanization and population growth with poorly organized waste management which therefore creat alot of health issue.

Limbe is been characterised by a very high urban growth, and the town of limbe in the Buea neighborhood is the likely future destination of this army of unemployed. Most of this population is job speculators waiting for the development project anounced in the near future in the secondary town to go operated. Limbe like many other towns in Cameroon have a record for non respect of urban master plan enforcement faced with population growth and challenges.

Limbe today is been focused of many development project call upon to play important economic roles through heavy capital investment in many projects that will boost the image of the city and the economy. This will in other reduces and wipe out the problems been faced in housing challenge given room by solving the issue been gotten from increase in population.

Population increase or growth is an increase in the number of people in a population or dispersed group. global human population growth constitute 83 million anually or 1.1% per year .the global population has increased From 1 billion in 1800 to 7.9 billion in 2020 an estimate have been put that’s the total population at 8.6 billion by mid 2030 , 9.8 billion by mid 2050 and 11.2 billion by 2100. Population increase or growth is one of the basically phenomenon that have been occuring all over the world.

World human population has been growing since the end of Black Death. Around the year 1350. However, big monopolitan countries have been experiencing an Increasing nature of rapid population. Cameroon particularly is not well developed as compared to monopolitan countries or multi- developed countries yet also has the ability of experiencing this process of rapid industrialized technology occuring or happening in the country.

At a high voltage of export and import in Cameroon it had also made the population should increase. LIMBE is an emerging industrial city experiencing urbanization and population growth and poorly organized waste management will create a lot of health. LIMBE which is our main case of study  is a town been pinpointed to be  a key aspect elaborated more on population growth / increase  in limbe 1 municipality alongside housing challenge which must be gotten from the increasing nature of population growth  the town of limbe constitutes a general issue of housing problems  .

Housing problems is one of the social problem bred by capitalism which is been manifested as a particular form of housing need with the growth of the population .due to the distinctive attribute between population and housing, the is a base which compromised of two sided phrase that’s on the first phrase, population change or increase may lead to a change in the demand of housing. population growth and specifically the growth in the number of house hold demand .at the same time the supply of housing  influence by the opportunity for population increase through immigration .

Limbe is been noted as an economic and social dormain were alot of activities are been taking place in the cause of that it has brought forth the increasing nature of the population to trade in the area by so doing bringing or increasing the level of urbanization of people which inturned lead’s to the shortage of housing, Limbe is a coastal city located in Cameroon.  And the neighboring countries that Limbe shares its borders with are Nigeria (to the west) and the Atlantic Ocean (to the south).  increased overcrowding, spread of slum and shantytown .all this activities constitute the rising nature of the population and housing challenge in Limbe I municipality

1.2 Statement of the problem

Population increase and housing challenge is general issue that has been occuring since in the past decades. Considering the circumstances, as far as the growth of the population is being concerned it will obviously lead to the contribution of the low standard of living given an impact to the housing challenges cost burden, overcrowding Will also influences the housing problems. another promising aspect of housing challenge is the perspective and the tendency of high birth rate as most of the youths are in the 20s and 30s where they’re likely to start their own families .the large family size especially in Limbe 1 Municipality make it hard for them to provide all the neccesary basic items inother to keep the kids and the entire household in tack. By so doing, it makes so so difficult for the people’s in Limbe to be able to achieve all their needs hence bringing forth the aspects of housing challenges in the people of Limbe 1 Municipality.
