PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT AND IT EFFECT ON GEOGRAPHY STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOL IN THE BUEA MUNICIPALITY
Abstract
This study was designed to investigate “Parental involvement and it effect on Geography students’ academic performance in secondary school in the Buea municipality”. The objectives that were used for the study were: To examine how parental guidance affects geography students’ academic performance in the Buea Municipality, to understand how parental motivation affects geography students’ academic performance in the Buea Municipality and to examine the extent to which parental expectations affect geography students’ academic performance in the Buea Municipality.
The research design use for the study was the descriptive research. The sample size was 100 students selected from three secondary schools in Buea municipality. The questionnaire was used to obtain information from correspondents and data were analyzed descriptively using percentages and frequencies and inferentially using person’s product correlation. The following results were obtained; the findings reveals that use of praise positively affect Secondary School Students Discipline in the Buea Municipality.
Again the findings reveals that the use of non-verbal communication positively affect Secondary School Students Discipline in the Buea Municipality, and lastly the findings reveals that the use of rewards positively affect Secondary School Students Discipline in the Buea Municipality.
Based on the findings on research question it was recommended that Parents should diversify their sources of income to be able to provide fund for their children’s schooling. Parents should equally realize the importance of using rewards and other measures to motivate their children.
Schools should implement programs to encourage parent-child discourse in the early grades, and make concerted efforts to maintain these communication lines between parents and children throughout the child’s schooling career.
If necessary, in times of fiscal difficulty, one could even argue that resources already devoted to establishing or maintaining parent-school linkages should be diverted into programs to foster and nourish parent-child communication and lastly Government should organize seminars and workshops to parents on the need to support their ward regularly.
