MOTIVATION AS A SOURCE OF PERSONNEL’S EFFICIENCY WITHIN EXPRESS UNION BUEA MUNICIPALITY
Abstract
This research on motivation as a source of personnel efficiency with case study of Express Union branches within Buea Municipality has an objective to asses the impact of motivation in achieving goals of any organization to identify various strategies to motivate employees.
The study investigated various dangers or threats at the doors of Express Union. The researcher used basically three theories to explain the phenomenon of motivation these includes: Maslow’s Hierarchy Needs, Douglas McGregor’s Theory X and Y, and Herzberg’s motivation –hygiene theory of motivation.
Research however made use of both primary and secondary data. Instrument used to obtain primary data in this work is basically questionnaire, interview and observation. The researcher ends by making certain proposals for enhancement to the Express Union some of which are pledge for argumentation of hall, reduction of charges as well as increment of staff one of who must be a cashier.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION
1.11 Background to the Study
Both at individual, private and public levels, motivation play a paramount role in the exploitation of potentials. To this effect, most organizations in the modern world use motivation as the key human resource for the achievement of varied goals.
Rant and Reece (2005) defined motivation as influence that account for initiation, direction intensity and persistence of behaviors but in more practical term, the business dictionary.com define motivation as internal and external factors that stimulates desire energy in people to be continually interested and committed to job, role or functions or even subject. Many institutions often awards job medals and other offerings to staffs as a means of encouraging them to work harder and this is what motivation is all about
Express Union on her part is an approved financial company created in 1997 with the head office in Yaoundé. At the beginning, the company was specialized in money transfer all over the ten regions in Cameroon a domain in which it is still the leader.
Today the company has over 465 branches in Cameroon and others outside the country. This institution views motivation as a God – given resource for the achievement of her goals. Their optimistic approach to motivation ties with Frank Hawkins assertion 1993 that “motivation influences the level of performance, efficiency achieved and time spent on activity. The research shall therefore critically analyze the impacts of motivation on the performance of express union employees.
However, Express Union remains the leader amongst all the money transferring companies within Buea Municipality. All branches in this locality are subordinated to the check point branch which hosts its head with the area. Though the Express Union is principally base on money transfer that is both sending and receiving, it also carries out functions opening accounts to people of at least 21 years and also serve as medium through which certain students can pay their fees. She has offer employment to over 90 people including janitors.
1.12 Statement of Problem
Many organizations have been closing up not because of lack of enough capital to ensure smooth functioning and incompetent personals but due to management laxity toward motivating personnel. It is therefore high time for all involved management and leadership positions to begin to take the issue serious.
However, the fundamental problem facing this research whether express union branches within Buea municipality takes adequate moves to motivate their personnel’s. The following questions therefore necessitate this study.

- What are the measures taken by management of express union branches in Buea to improve on personnel performance?
- How well does this institution perform its task
- Why are some clients classified with express union agencies in Buea?
- What could be done to ensure satisfaction?
- What other services do express union branches offer to their clients?
