MAGNETIC BRAKING SYSTEM
Abstract
The conventional brake system depends on the principle of friction for operation. The braking system is one of the most important safety systems in a vehicle. The ability of the braking system is to bring the vehicle to a safe controlled stop.
It is absolutely essential in preventing accidental vehicle damage, personal injury, and loss of life. This study deals with the concept and design of a magnetic braking system used in small and medium vehicles. In this present work, one such attempt is made by using magnetic fields as a braking system.
With the use of neodymium magnets which are pulled into place by pushing down on the brake pedal, once the neo magnets are in place they slow the moving object with the application of a magnetic force (Eddy currents)
CHAPTER ONE
GENERAL INTRODUCTION
Background Study
While not discussed at all in the past, the topic of magnetic braking has dramatically increased in popularity in recent years. Since 1987, the American Journal of physics has published numerous articles on the subject.
These articles describe both experiments dealing with magnetic braking, as well as the theory behind the phenomenon. This form of braking is so popular now that even a 92 mph roller coaster, uses a magnetic braking system as opposed to the traditional friction brakes.
The brake system is one of the most important safety systems on a vehicle. The ability of the brake system is to bring the vehicle to a safe controlled stop is absolutely essential in preventing accidental vehicle damage, personal injury, and loss of life.
The conventional brake system depends on the principle of friction for operation. Sliding friction (kinetic friction) is the rubbing action of one object sliding on the surface of another, such as a brake disk on a brake pad or a brake drum on a brake lining.
The components of the conventional brake system such as pad, drum, lining, etc. become worn out over time. Therefore, the components of the conventional brake system must be replaced periodically.
In addition, friction produces heat, which must be dissipated by the brake by the brake drum and linings or rotor and pad. The heat caused by repeated severe braking and wears causes brake fade. So to overcome this permanent neodymium magnetic are used. These magnets having high magnetic repulsion and attraction force helps in the braking effect. These are totally frictionless. Due to this, they are more durable and have a longer life span.
These brakes are an excellent replacement for conventional brakes due to their many advantages. Magnetic brakes don’t require any interfacing relay. Due to its non-greasy bearings, the pins of magnetic brakes do not require any friction buster. So this can be implemented in lighter vehicles and work handling devices to reduce brakes.
Problem statement
The continuous quest to have the need of people and industries meet has led to the establishment of industries and research facilities to establish and improve modem technology. The use of friction brake is the present system which is in use now but it has been realized that the friction brake has its own difficulties which it faces.
For example, the friction brake, involves a lot of heat due to the contact of two parts which causes the material to wear within a short period of time. As the friction brakes wear off at very short intervals it has to be change or repairs which also increases the expenditure.
Objectives
- To learn in detail how the magnetic braking system works and how the various components of the system can be placed together.
- To understand the concepts involved in the functioning of the magnetic braking system
- To learn how it provides convenient manipulation and intelligent features that make it distinct from the conventional friction brake
Research Questions
- Why is there a growing interest in magnetic braking systems?
- What is the advantage of a magnetic braking system over a friction braking system?
- Are magnetic brakes subject to failure, and why?
- How are magnetic braking systems impacting industries nowadays?
- How are magnetic braking systems managed in case of failure?
- Can the functioning of a magnetic braking system be altered, and how?
