KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND PRACTICE OF NON-PHARMACOLOGICAL METHODS OF PAIN MANAGEMENT BY NURSES ON CANCER PATIENTS
Abstract
Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience linked to actual or potential tissue injury or articulated in relation to such injury, and it varies among individuals and in the same individual at different times. This study aimed to evaluate nurses’ knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding the use of NPM in managing pain in cancer patients.
Rationally, the primary method of pain management among healthcare professionals continues to be the use of medications, which are often costly rather than utilizing cost-effective approaches that do not involve drugs. Currently, there is no clear framework for an all-encompassing strategy for pain management that incorporates evidence-based non-pharmacological methods.
This was an exploratory hospital-based cross-sectional study conducted over 6 months utilizing a well-structured questionnaire for data collection. The results indicated that 13 (42%) nurses lack knowledge about acupuncture as a pain management technique, with only 4 (16%) nurses being aware of acupuncture for managing pain in cancer patients. Additionally, 14 (56%) participants are knowledgeable about and use massage in cancer pain management, while 20 (80%) are aware of positioning as a non-pharmacological method for pain management in cancer patients.
Regarding practice or implementation, 135 (28.42%) responses were gathered from those practicing NPM, and 340 (71.58%) from those not engaging in any NPM for pain management. Factors affecting the utilization of NPM in cancer pain management included 15 (60%) nurses reporting insufficient knowledge and skills. Furthermore, 16 (64%) nurses noted a heavy workload as a barrier to the implementation of NPM for cancer patients.
In conclusion, nurses exhibit inadequate knowledge, poor attitudes, and limited practice with regard to the application of NPM, which impacts its use in pain management for cancer patients, with factors such as insufficient knowledge and skills, heavy workloads, and the time-consuming nature of NPM.
It was recommended that healthcare facilities should host seminars and workshops to educate nurses on the significance of implementing NPM in managing pain for cancer patients.
