TWO MONTHS INTERNSHIP CARRIED OUT AT PRESBOOK PLC LIMBE
Executive Summary
This study is a two months internship report carried out at presbook plc Limbe. During this period the intern was actively involved in several activities which did not only permit her to apply the theories she learned in school but also enabled her to developed new skills as far as marketing is concerned.
All through her two months, she spent most of her time in the shop as she gathered skills in aspects such as personal selling, stock taking and control and equally on sales promotion and strategies. In the other departments like accounting, stock management, stationary and book store, she learnt how to prepare a preformat invoice and how sales are being carried out. In the internal control department she learnt how the organization is being controlled internally, how all the various departments and branches communicate and interconnect with each other.
Lastly, working in the marketing department which is her filled of specialization, she was able to learn retail shop sales and promotional sales, out station duties and supplies upon request. She equally learnt updates of stock bin cards, personal selling networking etc.
During this period, some problems where identified such as late entering of books and stationaries, inadequate necessaries such as shopping basket to make the shopping process easy, limited working space especially at company’s warehouse, insufficient photocopy machines, displacements of stock bin cards, lack of incentives etc.
With all these problems, some recommendations where made which are; motivating the suppliers by giving them incentives for early supplies, provide shopping baskets for customers to ease purchase etc.
The strength of presbook is its strategic location, located at the heart of each town she finds her self in, physical evidence, reputation of good will, good and qualified management staff etc.
To conclude, presbook is noted by both the customers an the general public as a credible and reliable company, good in quality supply of book and stationaries. It has been able to retain its customers while attracting potential customers and also the company makes good of its strengths to tackle its weaknesses. Above all this internship has offered her the opportunity to submerge into a reality of operation and administrations in a typical organizational setting with the case of presbook.
CHAPTER ONE
BACKGROUND OF INTERNSHIP
1.1 Introduction
Internship is an opportunity offered made by employer to potential employees called interns to work in an organization for a particular length of time.it helps blend the theory acquired in class through lectures and personal efforts with what actually happens in practices. Internship gives students the opportunity to intergrade career related experience to an undergraduate education by taking part in the planning and supervision of work.
Internships are also called placement and can be work or industrial placement
Internship is an important requirement for students who wish to obtain a bachelor of technology [B-tech] degree and the higher national diploma[H.N.D].it offers students the chance to intergrade career related experience into an undergraduate education
During this period the students work in an organization on voluntary bases, internship allowed students to lay hands on jobs, make mistakes and have them corrected as it gives a long lasting experience
1.2 Characteristics of internship
Internship like any other course does have its own characteristics and some of them include
- It contributes to the student’s personal and professional development through challenging work assignment
- It is planned and scheduled through consultation with the department in order to fit into the undergraduate experiences
- It include a supervision component is that monitoring and educating career related experiences and knowledge acquired
- It is a learning process that needs to be completed before graduation from the university
1.3 Objectives of internship
- To enable the intern developed skills and techniques directly applicable to their careers and also the acquisition of good working habits which prepare them for the job market
- To intergrade career and theory related experience in the related fields of study
- It is intended to provide student with the necessary work experience that can prepare students for their future career
1.4 Significances of internship
1.4.1 Significances to students
- It provide an opportunity for career exploitation for the intern as he or she mingles with professionals in the course of internship and provides career awareness for the student, thus giving the student the chance to evaluate, reflect upon and try a career
- It gives student valuable experiences that help secure future employment
- It provides professional networking with the students
1.4.2 Significances to the Organization
- It provide potential candidates for full employment
- Cost effective that is interns turn to perform certain jobs for the organization free of charge
- Interns contribute new ideas in to the organization which turns to give them a return on investment either in the short or long run
1.4.3 Significances to the school
- It helps the university to achieve its goal of professionalized education.
- Strengthen ties between the university and organization
1.4.4 Limitations on Internship
- Interns are always expected work for little or no compensations and as such there may be reluctant to put in their best in to the organization because of lack of motivational factors
- The issue of placement has one live as a hindrance of internship. At times interns out of frustration may decide to do internship in organizations that don’t reflect what they study in school
- Most organizations are not willing to release vital information regarding the organization to their interns and as such limits the interns knowledge acquired from the organization.

ORGANISATIONAL BACKGROUND
2.1 Historical background of presbook
Presbook Plc was founded in the 1930s by the Basel mission .At that time it was call the Basel mission book depot and printing press. Form 1957 when Basel mission handed it activities to the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon the name change to what it is known as Presbook depot and printing press. since its creation in the 1930s the book depot and printing press function as one entity[with one general manager most of them where Swiss missionary expertise until 1999 when there felt the need to legally separate the company into two separate legal entity namely Presbook plc and Presprint plc respectively with the headquarter in Limbe or Victoria in Fako division south west region of the Republic of Cameroon .Presbook has a network of book shops across the national territory which are conveniently located in Buea ,Douala , Yaoundé , kumba , Bamenda and Limbe.
2.2 Mission of the company
From it humble beginning, the bookshop was meant to print and distributes Christians literatures such as bibles and church Hymnary mainly to the Christians of the Presbyterian church of Cameroon. As time went on the was an increasing needs for other books especially with the coming of Presbyterian schools.as the wind of education expanded there was also the need to increase the printing and distributions of school text books around the country.in addition ,there have been the need to source and distribute didactic material including stationaries, sidelines and office equipment.
Since then she has devoted her expertise and specialized in sourcing from local and foreign authors /publishers and distribute books at all levels of learning. Therefore the mission of Presbook is to distribute knowledge across Africa.
