INTERNSHIP CARRIED OUT AT CAMEROON OPPORTUNITY INDUSTRIALIZATION CENTER (COIC)
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Internship allows students to stand on bridge between the theoretically oriented classroom and practical world of industry professionals. this view point creates a unique opportunity of us to consider issues at the heart of discipline and profession of technical communication the results and evaluation at the end of our internship provides a place for us to cultivate insights that are perhaps not immediately accessible to our lectures and supervisors on the Job .
It is unique chance to reflect on professional identity and management practice in the work place.
This internship is carried out in Cameroon OIC Buea for practical training in human resource management. I choose Cameroon Oic because it is an organization that has a good number of workers with personnel management activity.
1.1.1 Orientation At The School (CUIB)
Attendance/Presence at work; we were given proper orientation at school to be early at the job site at least 30 minutes before normal work hours, we were also told to avoid late coming at all cost so as to nurture the idea of seriousness.
School attire (professional); again, we were orientated to put on decent dresses to work by so doing, covering ourselves in a dignified manner, which includes wearing of fitting dresses that are not transparent.
Respect of hierarchy/power; hierarchical respect is one of the vital tools to a good and successful workplace environment. Each organization has its own chain of command from the top executive to the regular employee, respecting an organizations hierarchy goes along way with respect the organizations culture, believes and values.
Professionalism; being professional at a workplace is also important by so doing, we were told to follow the organizations culture, policies and procedures of carrying out tasks.
Decency; decency here emphasis on the dressing, the manner in which we speak with the company. We were also told to avoid using fowl jargons.
Acting as an ambassador of CUIB; this entails portraying CUIB culture wherever we go, our actions should also promote the image of CUIBs, read policies in the organization and know the “do” and “don’ts”.
Coping with all the COVID-19 measures; this includes wearing face masks, washing our hands etc.
Confidentiality; this includes keeping information gotten from the company secretly.
NB: from the first day of work we were told to take along exercise books and a pen to jot down vital information concerning the organization which included feedbacks and contributions.
1.1.2 Orientation At The Company ( COIC)
Firstly, I was told to dress decent and avoid wearing trousers to the workplace because Presenting a positive representation of yourself is a key component of experiencing professional success. What you wear, how you communicate and your body language can all impact the image others have for you. Creating a professional look can help you command attention and serious consideration at work. Below are some major reasons why I was orientated on decent look
i.To represent your company
As a member of your organization, you serve as a representative of the company to the public. Whether you’re making service calls, visiting clients or speaking with customers in a store, your appearance reflects on the business.
ii.To enhance your credibility
When you look professional, people respond more positively to you, often engaging more and trusting what you’re saying.etc
Secondly, I was orientated to keep the information and details of the company confidential.
confidential information is abundant and an important obligation for organizations to keep safe. Below are important reasons why a company’s information should be private.
iii.Loss of Business:
When confidential information is mishandled, it can create a sense of distrust with customers and clients, which hurts a company’s bottom line.
iv.Criminal Activity:
When confidential information is misused to commit criminal activity, such as fraud, it inadvertently tarnishes a company’s reputation.
v.Decreased Morale
When confidential employee information is stolen, shared or disclosed
without consent, it deteriorates employer trust, confidence and loyalty. Etc
Thirdly, I was told on the hours of work in the company and was edged to be at the company minutes before so as to avoid late coming.
Again, was orientated to strictly follow the hierarchical order of the organization, respect organizations low and policies and to always be proactive and inquisitive to things I don’t understand.
1.2 Objectives Of Carrying Out The Internship
Main objective
The main objective for this internship is to gain full experience through practical work and to blend the theory with the practice and gaining industrial experience with the activities of personal department in relation to its functions at managing people at work.
Specific Objectives
- To be enlightened how recruitment and selection exercises are carried out in the institution
- To identify the training/staff Development and evaluation process
- To examine the pay system in the organization
- To solicit information on aspects of decision making in the organization
- To have knowledge on the procedures of retirement and leave process
- To enable us gain work experience and enter full time employment
1.3 Definition Of Terms
Document ‘information Personnel Employed
DIPE is a document that was used OIC to register salaries of workers, taxes deductions, and other financial records of employees before computers were brought to ease the process.
Economic Venture Unit
Evu is one of the fund raising units in OIC which consists of the driving schooling and pavilion
Personal Income Tax
In OIC, PIT is a type of income tax is levied on an individual’s wages, salaries, and other types of income. This tax is usually a tax the state imposes. Because of exemptions, deductions, and credits, most individuals do not pay taxes on all of their income.
Head of Department
Head of the Department means the elective officer, director, or other official in charge of a department.
Auto mechanic/meter Electricity
An automotive mechanic is defined as “a person who repairs and maintains machinery.
Hotel Catering
This entails food production, house keeping, hygiene and sanitation, food beverages and food and nutrition.
Program Director
In OIC, a Program Director is a professional who is responsible for researching, planning, and implementing an organization’s programs.
Training Manager
Training managers are specialists who help businesses by developing, facilitating and supervising training programs for employees.
Human Resource Management
Human resources managers plan, coordinate, and direct the administrative functions of an organization. They oversee the recruiting, interviewing, and hiring of new staff; consult with top executives on strategic planning.
Background of the Company (COIC)
Cameroon Opportunity Industrialization Center (COIC) was founded by an American man called Rev. Dr. Leon H. Sullivan and was created in 1986 with registration number 00066/22/05/1990. It is a non-profit organization based on non formal skill training program.
It was established as a local non-Governmental Organization and was placed under the supervision of the ministry of labour and social insurance after a protocol agreement was signed between the government of Cameroon and Opportunity centers International.
The center is located in BUEA in the Southwest Region.
Cameroon OIC BUEA. Was born to serve as a structure responsible for the needs of unemployed and underemployed Cameroonians without skills or those who could not succeed in the normal school system.
There is 15 OIC’s today operating in Africa and all of them started with funds from OIC International. OIC Provides students with marketable skills and that at the end of their training they undertake them to job creation and also assist them.
OIC has a unique system of man power training that was initiated in an abandoned jail house in Philadelphia where the first OIC training center was established as an informal vocational school with a training program for a duration of eighteen months.
In 1969, Reverend Sullivan established OIC International. The aim at is to help start OIC wherever there is a need worldwide.
